Hi!
My name is Natan and I am a math tutor. I graduated with a B.A. in mathematics from Cornell University and I am currently pursuing a PhD in math at the CUNY Graduate Center.
I have been teaching/tutoring formally for over two years but I've been helping my family and friends with math since was a kid. I have worked as a math tutor at Hunter College, CUNY, tutoring everything from remedial algebra to multi-variable calculus, linear algebra and other advanced math courses for majors. Since the fall 2011 semester, I have taught college algebra in the classroom at City Tech, CUNY.
For the past year I have also worked as a tutor at a major test-prep company, helping students with ACT, SAT, SHSAT, SAT2 math subject tests and general math tutoring. I have also worked privately with students on college calculus (client was a student at Brooklyn College) and on preparation for the math side of the GRE.
My teaching style is patient and thorough and my goal is for you to understand the concepts and learn to apply them rather than just memorize answers to problem types. I am just as comfortable working with younger students - I worked with a seventh grader on school math and catholic school admissions prep - as I am working with older students who haven't needed math in a long time and now need to refresh their skills for an exam such as the GRE or GMAT.
I believe that the most important quality for a tutor, in addition to deep content knowledge, is respect and empathy for his student. To me this means listening to the student's questions, never dismissing them as silly or as "something you should already know", and providing in-scope explanations that really resolve the confusion the student is having. In every lesson, I strive to follow this philosophy and create a warm and encouraging learning environment where my student feels comfortable asking any question knowing that I will always take it seriously and do my very best to explain it in a way he will understand.
I look forward to hearing your story and how I can help you!
Best,
Natan
