Hello parents and students,
My name is Guiane, and I am looking for a great opportunity to tutor a student in either math or English.
Information on me:
I am originally from North Carolina, and in December 2008, I received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and in Management & Society from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2010, I spent a year teaching English to children in Seoul, South Korea. I moved back to New York in March and was selected from approximately 40,000 applicants nationwide to join a national teacher corps of recent college graduates and professionals who commit two years to teach in under-resourced public schools. Through my program, Teach For America, I am currently teaching 3rd grade in Canarsie, Brooklyn.
My thoughts on tutoring:
I have tutored students in math for approximately seven years, and I have tutored math on all levels. I love teaching math because I push my students to understand math conceptually. When I teach math, I use a lot of concrete objects and pictures so that my students understand on a deeper level, and these techniques spark curiosity in my students.
While teaching English in Korea, I learned many techniques to engage students, and I relied on these engagement techniques because my young students started the year speaking little to no English. I had to be engaging to keep their attention! As a result, I excel in engaging my students now through the use of pictures, songs, stories and competitions. Also, I engage and invest students by tracking their progress in a visual way that is easy for them to understand.
Last thoughts:
I really enjoy working with students because my experiences give me the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills, confidence, self-esteem, and the curiosity for learning.
