Hello, name is Warren and I am excited to meet you!

I specialize in teaching the creative arts (drawing, painting, music, guitar), English (reading, writing, vocabulary) and art history, although I am comfortable teaching any of the liberal arts or sciences. I am experienced in both lesson-based and Montessori styles of teaching and try to integrate both approaches into my tutoring.

I am new to WyzAnt, but my tutoring experiences started in college when I tutored inner city children in drawing and painting. Since then I’ve taught English to elementary students in Taiwan, given guitar lessons at various levels and worked as a writing tutor and a teaching assistant in drawing while in graduate school.

I graduated from Sewanee, the University of the South in 1998 where I studied liberal arts while completing the pre-medical curriculum. The following year I moved to New York and entered Pratt Institute to study painting and art history, earning my Masters Degree in Fine Arts in 2001. Since graduating I have expanded the scope of my studies to include psychology, physics, literature, as well as music theory and composition. I’m currently enrolled in a post-graduate psychoanalytic training program; I’ll be a practicing psychoanalyst in a few years.

I consider myself a Renaissance man in that I have developed a love for learning which has expanded over the years to cover a wide range of subjects. I believe that I’ve discovered the art of learning, and I am enthusiastic about sharing it with my students. In my teaching experience I’ve found that what works best is for the student to learn how to enjoy the process of discovery. When we are curious about our discoveries, learning feels a lot more like fun instead of just work. That said, it is important to have a guide to provide structure and challenge the student through this process. Although my teaching philosophy involves discovering the art of learning, what is most important to me is to help you to achieve your goals as a student both for both the short and long term.

I am interested in the unique personalities and needs of each new student and am dedicated to helping you achieve.

Basketball

I have played competitive basketball for twenty years. In the past few years I have played in tournaments mainly consisting of ex-college players. My team won the Pratt Institute championship four times and I earned the MVP honors in 2008. I have thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of the game including defense, dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, conditioning and team play.

Painting

I am an accomplished painter with national and international exhibition experience. I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute. Although I am proficient in other methods of painting, I work in with a traditional technique to render highly realistic images. I have experience teaching at elementary to college levels involving many aspect of painting including design, drawing, color interaction and use of specific materials.

Art History

I studied Art History from Renaissance to Contemporary at both an undergraduate and graduate level. I earned a Masters of Fine Art in 2001 and have continued to read and write on various aspects of the subject. I have curated several art shows and frequently exhibit my artwork. I visit art museums at least monthly and have extensive knowledge of the major collections in the States as well as Europe.
