Dear Students,

I bring years of experience and proven methods to help students quickly improve their English, raise test scores, and find confidence in their pronunciation and speaking voices.

I have taught at top institutes in Manhattan in subjects from conversation to Business English to TOEFL preparation. I also spent two years at a Chinese university. My students have come from all over the world, and they improve quickly. I have taught students of all experience levels, from beginners up to fluent speakers needing specialized coaching. I have special expertise in pronunciation, and have spent more than ten years studying pronunciation, phonetics, and speech. I have studied many languages (Mandarin, French, German, Italian, and even a bit of Russian), so I know what it's like to struggle with new sounds!

Many students also struggle with grammar, and many teachers struggle to teach it in an interesting and simple way. I enjoy the challenge, and am the type of person to read books on grammar for fun ("Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue" is a recent favorite). Since I'm familiar with the grammar of several other languages, I am comfortable finding many different ways to explain the same grammar point to students.

In speech coaching, I enjoy helping students understand their bodies, especially the breath system. Through a series of simple and calming exercises, students learn to become aware of the different parts of their breathing and speaking musculature, and to identify tensions that distort their speech sounds. I have coached speakers who get hoarse, speakers whose throats close the moment they get in front of a podium, speakers who can only maintain a breathy whisper, and many other problems. All of these can be overcome, usually pretty quickly and easily.

My undergraduate and graduate degrees in music (voice and composition emphasis, as well as pedagogy) form the basis of my music tutoring. I started studying piano when I was five and music theory when I was eight, and cannot remember a day when I couldn't read music or analyze chords. I have taught composition workshops at the Oberlin Conservatory, where I also tutored music theory and ear training, and I enjoy making the subject interesting and painless, instead of confusing and mathematical.

Whatever your goals with English or with speaking, I look forward to helping you achieve them.

Composition (Music)

I have a Bachelor's of Music degree in Composition from Oberlin Conservatory, received May 2005.

Ear Training

I have a Bachelor's and a Master's of Music degrees from top conservatories (Oberlin and Indiana University). Ear training is a core component of all music programs. Furthermore, as a composition student, I had to take ear training courses beyond the core.

General Music

I hold both bachelor and master of music degrees. Since they are music degrees, both included a core curriculum of musical subjects, not only study in the major field. I have taken performance, music literature, music theory, and music history courses.

Music History

I have taken undergraduate and graduate coursework in this subject area. Moreover, my courses in music history comprise many different periods. This gives me a broad overall view. Specifically, I have taken: General Music History, from chant to the present; 20th Century Music History; Music of the Baroque; History of Opera from the 16th Century to the Present; and Contemporary American Opera. I also have professional performing experience in the complete range of music, from late 16th-century to the present day.

Sight Singing

I have several courses in sight singing at the undergraduate level. This included atonal sight singing. I have also worked church jobs for several years in which sight reading was a critical component.

Speech

I have taken several courses that relate to speech. I have taken two vocal pedagogy courses, including one at the doctoral level, which included much information about the anatomy and physiology of the voice and voice production. I have also taken several courses at the university level in English and foreign language pronunciation, which included work with the International Phonetic Alphabet. Moreover, as a stage performer with acting and singing experience, I can speak authoritatively on issues about performance.

Theatre

I have performed in the theater for nearly twenty years, since I was a child. I am a professional opera singer today, but have also performed in musical theater. In addition, I have taken acting classes for the spoken theater at New York's T. Schreiber Studio.

Voice (Music)

I have both a Bachelor's and a Master's of Music degree in Voice Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University.

Writing

I have taught writing privately and at ELS Language Center, Manhattan, for several years. Past students have scored over 25 on the writing portion of the TOEFL! I tutor all phases of the writing process, from brainstorming to outlining to final edits.
