As a writing and subject peer tutor at Lawrence University, I developed real friendships with the students I tutored. Often, they felt comfortable coming back to me throughout all stages of the writing process from idea generation to outlining to final edits. My most important strategy to create this relationship was to be a friend and not a lecturer. I never wanted the students I tutored to feel helpless because I had "figured out" academic writing. The service I offer is to be an active listener and a guide.
I'm a firm believer in the idea that students will remember more of what they learn if they play an active role in that learning. I will never sit in silence with a student, marking up their assignments myself as if only I hold the secret to great paragraph construction. If we talk through the logical steps of editing (or anything else for that matter), we can always figure out why something has to be the way it is.
I thoroughly enjoy seeing the spark of understanding on a student's face, which is why I spent so much of the past six years working with students, refining my techniques, and gaining expertise in more and more subjects and tutoring situations.
As an instructor of composition at Miami University, I expanded my method of teaching self-guided writing practice to classes of over twenty students. I often paired writing instruction with discussion aimed to enforce critical thinking skills.
I graduated college with a minor in Film Studies and have spent large amounts of time reading and writing about film. My specialties include contemporary American and Central European films (including Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic). In addition to taking classes, I have designed syllabi for film classes with small groups of students.
I am a native Polish speaker who was born in Krakow and moved to the United States when I was five years old. My parents continued speaking Polish with me at home, and even though I have spent many years in the United States, I can be a great conversation partner who can improve your understanding and pronunciation of Polish.
Being good at something doesn't necessarily make one qualified to teach it, but I am a really good and fast reader, and it helps that I love being around people reading or learning to read. My goal (after I finish my Master's degree in creative writing) is to work at a literacy center, where I can put over five years of tutoring experience to use. In 2010, I worked with an eight year old boy intensively for over six months. We mainly focused on reading and comprehension. I created assignments for him that included writing up reports and summaries of the stories, books, and articles he read in order to make sure that instead of just sounding out words, he was also remembering and understanding. We worked hard, but had time for games that improved his vocabulary such as Boggle and Scrabble.
I've been interested in film production since I was 14 years old when I received my first camcorder. Through high school, I made many short films, culminating in a 50 minute film written and shot with a group of friends over the course of one summer. In college, I was an active member of film production club, organizing and participating in film festivals every term. I have experience with final cut express and some windows editing software.
Aside from being a creative writer (fiction), I have been tutoring students of all ages in writing since 2008, and most recently, I taught freshman composition and rhetoric courses at Miami University (Ohio). In these courses, I taught personal writing, rhetorical analysis, research skills, public speaking, and continuous reflection on the writing process. I guided students through outlining, drafting, revising, translating into different formats, and figuring out which processes are most beneficial to them for writing in their fields.
Excellent Tutor — Magdalena is a native Polish speaker. She was born in Poland but moved here at a young age so speaks both English and Polish perfectly. She is an excellent teacher. I am a complete beginner. She was very patient with me, as I have a hard time with some of the pronunciations. She offered a lot of help with some specific words and broke things down into manageable units so that I was able to learn t ...
