Since graduating from Indiana University with a dual degree in English and Spanish, I've spent the past seven years as an educator. While I've worked mainly as a teacher and tutor, I've also served as community lead and head content developer for an education start-up. I have a MA in English literature from UC - Santa Barbara, where I taught undergraduates and gave lectures on subjects from modernist literature to race and gender in Shakespeare.

My teaching experiences are diverse. I've tutored hundreds of students one-on-one, and run classes in groups as large as 50 at the high school and university level. I'm TEFL certified and taught for two years overseas -- in Taipei, Taiwan and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

For the past two years I have worked as community lead and head tutor for an education start-up, while tutoring for the SAT, LSAT, and general education from middle-school on up.

Test-preparation is a specialty. I scored in the 96th percentile on the SAT and in the 99th percentile on the LSAT. Our start-up also developed its own SAT test-prep curriculum and diagnostic software, in which I played a key role, both creating and actually implementing it in several Brooklyn High schools.

My approach to tutoring is simple and can be summed up in three words: diagnose, teach, assess.

Diagnosing means first learning from the student specifically what the trouble is, and then understanding what their goals are. I do this by breaking the test down into content units, and using a practice test to identify exactly which units the student has not mastered. This allows me to make a clear action plan, based on where the student is now, and where they want to be (1900 on the SAT, 2200?).

The teaching is part content (how do you balance equations), part strategy (how do you manage your time) and part psychology (how do you deal with test anxiety?). Which part is prioritized depends on the student, but this is determined with a diagnostic test and one or two sessions.

Finally, I do weekly ASSESSMENTS, in the form of actual practice tests. This lets us measure progress in a scientific way. I use these assessments to make adjustments and to hold the student, as well as myself, accountable. The actual results from week-to-week should always be clear to parents, students, and myself.

It is my policy to always do a free diagnostic session. This lets you see if it's a good fit, at no cost. If you're interested, let me know. Thanks!

Elementary (K-6th)

My credentials for teaching Elementary (K-6th) education are as follows:

From August 2007 - June 2008, I worked as an English, Literature, and Composition teacher in Taipei, Taiwan, for a company known as Kojen. I taught in both large group and one-on-one sessions, and worked primarily with pre-school to 11 and 12 year-old students. Additionally, I worked this past Fall, from September to February, as a tutor for two sixth grade students, in Math and Reading, for a company in Louisville, KY. We covered subjects ranging from identifying the main idea, drawing inferences and conclusions based on a piece of text, to basic algebra and geometry in Math. Additionally, having scored in the 96th percentile on the SAT, I am entirely comfortable with the level of Math and Reading required to tutor elementary school students.

ESL/ESOL

My credentials for teaching ESL are as follows:

From August 2007 - July 2008, I worked in Taipei, Taiwan as an English instructor. I taught Reading and Writing, oral comprehension and speaking, in both large group and on-on-one settings, for a company known as Kojen. While I taught primarily younger students, I also worked with teenagers and adults.

Additionally, from the fall of 2010 to the spring of 2011, I worked in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as a TEFL instructor. My clients ranged from children to adults, though I worked primarily for large businesses (Carrefour, IBM, Heineken) whose employees were required to speak and write in English. As a tutor, I worked in small groups and one-on-one sessions, improving speaking, writing, and reading comprehension.

Finally, I am TEFL-certified, earning my certification in 2007 from a company known as "I-to-I".

ISEE

Working for a company called BrightKids NYC, I have the taught the ISEE to dozens of fifth grade students, and several older students for the middle-level ISEE as well.

LSAT

I have tutored the LSAT for the past two years, and earned a score of 176 (99th percentile) on the exam. I am happy to provide a scanned copy of the results.

PSAT

As lead content developer for an ed-tech startup, I co-created an entire SAT program. Diagnostic software, study plans - based on a student's current standing and learning goals, test strategy customized to the student, and original practice questions.

Using our program, we ran classes with 30 - 40 students at two high schools in Brooklyn, as well as doing one-on-one tutoring for dozens of students. At a fraction of the cost of the leading prep companies (Kaplan and Princeton Review), we averaged a score increase three times higher than those companies. We worked with students ranging from the 10th to the 90th percentile, from both remedial and advanced classes.

Regents

I have worked with several students on the Regents exam. I have worked with two fifth-grade students on the English Language Arts Regents, and with one seventh-grader. I have also worked with a seventh-grade student on the ELA exam. I have worked with a high-school senior on the Spanish Regents, and with a high-school freshman on the Integrated algebra exam.

SAT Math

As lead content developer with Empyrics, an ed-tech startup, I co-created an entire SAT program. Diagnostic software, study plans - based on a student's current standing and learning goals, test strategy customized to the student, and original practice questions.

Using our program, we ran classes with 30 - 40 students at Bishop Loughlin Memorial HS and St. Saviour HS in Brooklyn, as well as doing one-on-one tutoring for dozens of students. At a fraction of the cost of the leading prep companies (Kaplan and Princeton Review), we averaged a score increase three times higher than those companies. We worked with students ranging from the 10th to the 90th percentile, from both remedial and advanced classes.

SAT Reading

As lead content developer for an ed-tech startup, I co-created an entire SAT program. Diagnostic software, study plans - based on a student's current standing and learning goals, test strategy customized to the student, and original practice questions.

Study Skills

Having taught English at the high school and university level, as well as tutored in elementary Math and Reading, and high-school students for the SAT, I have experience in developing students' study skills. I have worked on a general level - tutoring students on how to prepare for their school exams in Spanish, English, and Math, and I have taught study skills specifically for standardized tests - namely, the SAT, LSAT, and ELA exams. Study skills are much less content than method, how to approach a specific test or subject, by learning exactly the strategies and content needed to excel in that particular test or subject.

Great tutor with a winning personality Boy am I glad that I found Sean to tutor my niece for her Spanish regents. He was very easy to contact. He responded to my email inquiries pretty quickly. When he arrived for the first session I was struck by how friendly he was and he put my niece at ease immediately. He was able to pinpoint what she needed to work on, and he focused on it in a way that was easy for her to understand. I am happy ...
