I am recently retired from the New York City school system after teaching science for over twenty years. I hold a doctorate in biology and conducted research in fat and alcohol metabolism. I can tutor all areas of biology, as well as high school chemistry and algebra. I aim to help students develop independent research skills, showing them how to locate sources and distill information relevant to the problem to be solved. Equipped with these skills, students will be prepared for the Regents and SATs, and for college level work.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Hebrew

I regard Hebrew as my "half-native" language. I have been using it since I was six years old. I attend synagogue at least once a week and pray in Hebrew, and I understand what I am saying. On occasion I read from the Torah scroll, also in Hebrew, and I understand what I am reading. Since the age of six I have been studying the Bible (Tanakh), Mishnah and other sacred texts in the original Hebrew. My school taught all religious subjects as well as modern Hebrew itself in Hebrew. Besides the sacred texts, we studied classical literary works by authors such as Agnon, Tchernikhovsky and Bialik. I wrote compositions in Hebrew on a wide range of topics, and also wrote letters in Hebrew to my Israeli relatives. Hebrew was the only subject where I scored 100% on the Regents in high school. I visited Israel several times and interacted with the locals in Hebrew without a problem. I would say that I am about as fluent in Hebrew - reading, writing and speaking - as a non-Israeli can be.
