My name is Heather, and I am a resident of Philadelphia and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. I was a math teacher for two years in the Philadelphia School District, and I received my teaching certification at Chestnut Hill College. I taught Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 each year and am certified to teach up to Calculus I and SAT Math. I also coordinated the tutoring program at my school, which gave me much experience working one-on-one with students.
I approach tutoring sessions with a personalized lesson plan, detailing the work to be done and the ways in which we will attack each concept. I encourage learning by thinking and by doing, therefore I provide a lot of practical and hands on work. I create situations for students to put themselves into in order to understand a mathematical concept differently because I find that this helps kids that have trouble memorizing or connecting concepts.
I develop environment for and encourage students to communicate and feel comfortable asking questions (which a lot of kids are afraid to do in class).
