I am a graduate of the TESLA certificate program at the Literacy Assistance Center in New York City. TESLA stands for Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults. I tutor adults one-on-one, but while in the TESLA program, I led a conversation group at a public library for seventeen months. If you would like group lessons, then, I am your tutor.

Every student is different. Every student needs variety in a lesson. You may want to practice mainly grammar and vocabulary, but you may also want to talk or write about an interesting topic. Sometimes, you may not want me to correct your English, and at times this is the best way.
You may need to practice speaking or writing in a certain work situation. Maybe you need help with speaking on the phone. Maybe you are writing a paper for a course, or an essay for a college application. Maybe you need help with Business English. Here is a little summary of what happens when you work with me. In the first session, we talk about your English needs, interests, learning styles, and goals. I give you some questionnaires about these things. I listen to you, read your answers, and study your emails. I research and create activities that will help your progress. After the first session, I keep learning new things about you. I create or find listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation activities that are right for you. I will often ask you to use more than one language skill in an activity. I give you interesting homework that helps all of this.

I worked as an assistant elementary school teacher for a year in 2000-2001. In the years before I earned my adult ESL teaching certificate, I assisted many elementary school-aged children with their homework. I have raised two sons; this life experience has certainly helped me to interact well with young children.

If you are eager to learn even more, I can give you homework that is enjoyable and that adds a lot to lessons. For example, if you want to work on grammar, it is good to do so in different ways. A more structured way is with worksheets and homework is a good opportunity to do such exercises.
There are so many exciting topics that we can use in our work. For one, I would love to learn about your culture. Perhaps you would like to discuss your native culture and compare it with American culture. Talking about interesting subjects motivates my students to speak English more fluently and more correctly.
I will give you choices of material and encourage you to find your own materials online. This is another aspect of my highly interactive teaching.
Ever since I was in high school I have demonstrated strong ability in proofreading and editing as well as writing. As an adult ESL tutor today, I often assist students with editing (what many people call proofreading). Years ago, I completed a one-semester course in copy editing and proofreading at NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
I am passionate about helping students learn to edit their own work. Because I am a teacher rather than an editor, strengthening the student's ability to edit and supporting his or her awareness of effective writing are my goals. I don't take over the student's assignment as an expedient.
As an adult ESOL tutor, I like nothing better than helping students to strengthen their written English. I am just as passionate about tutoring native speakers in writing. The advantage for my writing students is my ability to support their "inner editor" rather than slip into editing for them. If appropriate, I provide examples from others' writing to help students grasp the features of stronger writing.
Although I address the writing challenges specific to each English language learner, I guide all students toward the use of certain strategies and steps, especially if they are tasked with writing essays. In this case, I assist with brainstorming, clarification, organization, and sometimes the use of drafts. A particular essay format required by the classroom teacher may be another factor.
Whether students need to write essays or emails, I highlight the differences in tone, format, vocabulary, and even grammar between more and less formal text types.
Learning to write well is hard work! It helps that I believe my students have important ideas and feelings to express, and that they can convey them not only correctly but creatively. And I bring tidbits of wonder and humor to the process whenever I spy the potential for them.
