Are you learning English as an adult? I would love to assist you whether you are a professional, a student, or a job-seeker. I would love to assist you whether you have studied English for one year or ten, or whether you are from Asia, Europe, or another continent. I also specialize in writing instruction for I learners of English and native speakers alike.

I am a 2012 graduate of the TESLA certificate program at the Literacy Assistance Center in New York City. TESLA is Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults. Even before entering the program, I was tutoring and leading an ESL conversation group at a public library.

Working one-on-one has many benefits for you. It means activities and homework that help YOU learn. I take the time to find out what you need to learn and how you learn best. As a tutor, I have a big heart and a great sense of humor: important ingredients in learning. You will not have to worry about making mistakes, because I understand that how important they are in learning English. If you are adjusting to life in the U.S., we will also talk about American culture; culture and language are closely related.

My experience is that students who are already skilled in English benefit the most from my style of tutoring. However, I have also had success with students who are less skilled.

Please email me and tell me about your needs, interests, and goals in English!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored adults in ESL since 2009 and completed the 15-month TESLA program at NYC's Literacy Assistance Center in 2012. I led adult ESL conversation groups at libraries from 2009 to 2011. I have tutored one-on-one since early 2010.

Over five years of teaching English language learners one-on-one, I have developed my own style of tutoring. I begin by assessing your needs and language level. I plan and research each lesson. Easy to work with, I am creative, friendly and motivating. I urge you to email me your language questions. I keep in mind that adults learning a new language are also adjusting to a new culture.

You are an adult with unique learning needs, so my materials, activities, and topics vary greatly with each student. We choose these things together if you prefer.. Along with specific language skills, I focus on learning strategies which assist you in learning outside of our lessons.

Proofreading

Ever since I was in high school I have demonstrated strong ability in proofreading and editing as well as writing. As an adult ESL tutor today, I often assist students with editing (what many people call proofreading). Years ago, I completed a one-semester course in copy editing and proofreading at NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

I am passionate about helping students learn to edit their own work. Because I am a teacher rather than an editor, strengthening the student's ability to edit and supporting his or her awareness of effective writing are my goals. I don't take over the student's assignment as an expedient.

Writing

As an adult ESOL tutor, I like nothing better than helping students to strengthen their written English. I am just as passionate about tutoring native speakers in writing. The advantage for my writing students is my ability to support their "inner editor" rather than slip into editing for them. If appropriate, I provide examples from others' writing to help students grasp the features of stronger writing.

Although I address the writing challenges specific to each English language learner, I guide all students toward the use of certain strategies and steps, especially if they are tasked with writing essays. In this case, I assist with brainstorming, clarification, organization, and sometimes the use of drafts. A particular essay format required by the classroom teacher may be another factor.

Whether students need to write essays or emails, I highlight the differences in tone, format, vocabulary, and even grammar between more and less formal text types.

Learning to write well is hard work! It helps that I believe my students have important ideas and feelings to express, and that they can convey them not only correctly but creatively. And I bring tidbits of wonder and humor to the process whenever I spy the potential for them.

I have tutored several adults in English as a Second Language through WyzAnt. Over the past year, I have also led an enjoyable, weekly, two-hour adult ESL conversation group at the Brooklyn Public Library. These experiences have some things in common, two of which I'll share here. The best ESL activities ask students to use more than one of the “Four Skills”: listening, speaking, reading,... read more

I highly recommend Bonnie as a tutor! — Besides being an incredible tutor, Bonnie is also an incredible human being. I started having classes with Bonnie last November, and I can say that she has been helping me a lot to gain confidence in speaking and to refine my grammar. She is very careful about her student and always tries to bring interesting articles, exercises, and topics for conversation to class. Having class with her is pl ...
