Are you a busy adult who is learning English? I deeply respect your efforts, and I deeply believe in your progress.
I am a graduate of the TESLA certificate program at the Literacy Assistance Center in New York City. TESLA stands for Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults. I mostly tutor individuals but also led a conversation group at a Brooklyn public library for a year and a half.
If you could use better English on the job or at college, or in speaking with your child's teacher, would it make a big difference for you? Do you wish for a teacher who helps make speaking easier? (Even speaking on the phone!) A teacher who structures and inspires your work in every session? Do you hope for a teacher who understands that you are not only learning English, you are also adjusting to a new country, society, and culture.
I am that teacher, and I always consider the big picture of your learning. I understand that you may want to concentrate on grammar and vocabulary, but that you may also want to talk or write about an interesting topic, person, current event, movie, or poem. We may need to practice some situations at work that come up every day. Sometimes you are unsure about something cultural. I know you are probably adjusting to a new society and culture while you are learning English. That's a lot at once!
Do you need tutoring in writing, whether you are an English language learner or a native speaker? I am expert in assisting intermediate to advanced learners in writing, whether their writing task is a business profile, a college essay or, or a speech delivered to colleagues.
In general ESL tutoring, what can you expect from me? In the first session, we explore your English needs, interests, learning styles, and life goals. We do this through a series of questionnaires and simply by talking. I listen to you, and I carefully review your emails to me. Everything I learn, from the first session onward, helps me to research and create activities that are most helpful to your progress. I explore listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation activities that you need. I often combine a few of these language skills in one activity.
I would love to hear from you. Perhaps you have already posted about your tutoring needs, but you could tell me more about your needs, interests, and goals in English. Please don't worry about making a mistake!
