I am a New York State, New York City Licensed and Certified teacher. I am licensed and certified in N-6 elementary education, and as a Teacher of the Deaf. I was a Special Education teacher for 31 years and am recently retired. I have extensive experience in teaching beginning reading skills and in ESL. I focus primarily on auditory skills including phonemic awareness and the decoding of the sound-symbol relationship of the English language. I incorporate a whole language, literacy oriented approach in which the arts and a rich background of general knowledge is inculcated. Vocabulary development is an ongoing component of my approach. I use games, songs, classic children's literature and the Orten-Gillingham method of direct sequential instruction in order to give my students a comprehensive exposure to the joys of reading and a competence in the necessary basic skills needed to be literate in our society.
I also enjoy teaching older youngsters through High School, in the areas of English and History. I have extensive experience working with older students. I focus mainly on higher level vocabulary development including Greek and Latin roots and use a multidisciplinary approach to the study of history.
I am certified through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education, an Orton-Gillingham program. I a ma member of the Orton-Dislexia association.

As a teacher with a graduate degree in Teaching the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, more than half of my course work was devoted to the understanding of the speech mechanism and to the language processing centers of the brain.
