I am a German-American singer/actress/producer/director and coach. I speak German and English fluently and accent-free. I coach adult singers, actors, dancers and public speakers in accessing a greater level of freedom on the stage and authenticity in their work. I am a German tutor of all adult students. I am also skilled in translation and coach German for singers and actors who have German material in their repertoire.
Born in Germany, I came to the U.S. at a young age and grew up on Long Island. Thereafter I lived in Arizona and Texas for many years and am now based in NYC. My second home is in Berlin and I maintain close connections to my European homeland and continent. I have traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe and perform around the world.
I have a BA degree from the University of Arizona where I majored in International Relations and minored in Music. I have studied voice with Myra Lerner, Jeanette Walters, Gina Ducloux, Carlo Faria and Jeannie LoVetri and acting with Tovah Feldshuh and Jessica Kubzansky. I conduct master classes in stage performance for singers and actors and in the art of self-managing one's artistic career. I have been endowed the world's only scholarship in cabaret performance at a leading NY university. Drawing on my experience as an entertainer comfortable before an audience, I have also coached people in public speaking.
I enjoy writing and I write extensively.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring. I believe in a warm, friendly, easy-going and accessible approach. I bring professionalism, commitment and reliability to my role as tutor and insist that students bring these qualities to the table as well. I take teaching seriously and believe that we learn best in an open and relaxed environment where we feel safe and can have a great deal of fun. My students have taught me a lot about myself and my craft.
Here's what's been said about my teaching:
I received an in-depth approach to the method of performance through the use of space, time, movement and storytelling. - Nicholas G., dancer, Port-of-Spain
With each of the participants I could see you working so closely that at times some broke into tears or burst into laughter. You helped us draw closer to each other. - Supratik B., public speaker, New Delhi
You've really left an amazing impression at Post. People are still talking about it. Many people agree with me when I say that it was the best convocation we've had since all of us have been here. - Andrzej K., music major, Long Island University
I learned how to make a song my own. - Sibyl, singer, Chicago
Karen has a fantastic eye for theatre and detail. Working with her on my cabaret debut taught me so much about intimate theatre and about my own strengths and instincts as a singer and actor. -Kim S., cabaret artist, NYC
It is your skill as a director that has given us the confidence to be ourselves in this new, intimidating, high-stakes environment. - Jennie L., singer-lyricist, NYC
A master singer herself, she helped guide me towards what is most true in myself - on stage, live and in the present moment. - Rebecca F., singer-playwright, NYC
I am a native German speaker who prefers to work with adults on conversational German. My specialty is coaching singers and actors who may undertake German in their work.
Shakespeare declared it: "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players, They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts..." One part that we may play from time to time is to stand before a group of people - family, peers, colleagues - and speak our truth. Some studies have shown that fear of public-speaking ranks up there with fear of death.
Whether you are confronting public speaking for the first time and are deathly afraid at the prospect of it, or are seasoned in stepping out in front of people and seeking ways to improve your comfort level and presentation, I can help you. I have been getting out inf ront of an audience since I was a child. Today I'm a professional and award-winning singer, actress, producer and director of music and theater based in New York City and Berlin. A graduate of the University of Arizona, I teach privately and give master classes at universities and for arts organizations and have established the world's only cabaret scholarship at a leading New York university. Drawing upon my work with singers and actors to improve their stagecraft - stage presence, breathing, understanding the voice, gesture, intent and more - I will help you relax in front of your audience and believe in this "part" you are playing so that you can comfortably convey your information, knowledge and truth and even have fun with it! Nerves are something performers at every level deal with throughout their careers. Nerves are the respect we pay our audience.
As Shakespeare declared it: "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players, They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts..." I offer one-on-one coaching in the technique of acting, voicework and stagecraft, as well as in career management, self-promotion, and producing. Drawing upon my master class, "The Elements of Performance," and "How the Self-Promoting Artist Wins," I will coach you through scene studies, monologue preparation and delivery, as well as the essential, non-technical aspects of performance that make an actor unique and lines memorable: carriage and the silhouette, gesture, atmosphere, stage presence, freeing the voice, diction, characterization and subtext, and more.
I'm an award-winning singer, actress, producer and director based in New York City and Berlin. I have studied acting with Tovah Feldshuh and Jessica Kubzansky and voice with Jeannette Walters, Carlo Faria and Gina Ducloux and am a graduate of the University of Arizona. In 1999, I founded my own production company, Fin Alley Arts Management, and have produced and directed productions (here and abroad), three albums, a number of cabaret shows for the award-winning Kabarett Kollektif (a European ensemble I founded in 2003), and the award-winning international cabaret and theater festival, Kabarett Fete. I’m passionate about arts education and along with my husband established the world’s only scholarship in cabaret at Long Island University in 2007. Outside the arts, I’ve facilitated life success workshops for PSI Seminars.
Singing is a way of life. I offer one-on-one coaching in the technique of singing and stagecraft, as well as in career management, self-promotion, and producing. Drawing from my master classes, "The Elements of Performance" and "Beyond the Beautiful Voice: How A Song is Sung," I will coach you through the elements of vocal performance and on-stage technique using exercises and songs that we choose together. We’ll explore the essential, non-technical aspects of performance that make a singer unique and a song memorable: carriage and the silhouette, gesture, atmosphere, stage presence, freeing the tone, diction, characterization and subtext, audience rapport and more.
