I am an enthusiastic, articulate music artist and knowledge-hungry graduate of Columbia College Chicago that resides in Brooklyn. Experienced as both a volunteer and hired tutor for diverse youth in both academic and arts subjects, my expertise lies in tutoring others in music theory, sight singing, voice, general music and in reading, grammar, mathematics (through Algebra and Geometry) and K-8th general subjects. As early as high school I tutored under-served youth in math and English as part of two after-school programs in St. Louis, before graduating as valedictorian in 2001. From high school, I began teaching private piano and voice lessons to students ages 8 to adult.
Upon moving to Chicago for college, I continued my tutoring and instructing experience by serving the Music Department of Columbia College Chicago as music tutor and as the resident English tutor for Conaway Achievement Project, a program for first-generation, low-income and special needs college students. I also worked as freelance tutor/mentor for peers throughout college, proofreading papers, clarifying music theory concepts, and assisting with sight singing practices.
Since graduating from Columbia with high honors and B.A. in Vocal Performance in 2006, I remained immersed in the world of music in Chicago, Illinois, as a music artist, freelance piano and voice instructor, assistant to various choral directors and as a language arts tutor. As a program assistant I served the acclaimed Chicago Children's Choir in the Hyde Park neighborhood, providing supervision and constant administrative, event and music support to over 100 children ages 8-14.
Having moved to New York at the start of 2009, I worked full-time with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy for nearly three years. I now freelance as an artist/musician and one-on-one tutor and private instructor, serving youth in the Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan areas. I look forward to continuing to provide solid assistance in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere in the subjects of English Language Arts, Mathematics, general subjects as well as music, voice and piano.
I am a patient, highly personable individual dedicated to the continued encouragement of educational and artistic development of people of diverse backgrounds. My teaching style employs a detail-oriented approach that caters to each individual. I hope to foster a love for learning, pride in one's accomplishments, and motivation to follow one's educational and creative goals.
