I have 20 years of experience teaching Regents Earth Science, and I really love the subject and I believe my passion is evident in my teaching and tutoring. Aside from classroom teaching, I hold several other education-related positions. I am the Lead Content Trainer in Regents Earth Science for New York City. I have served as a teacher-consultant to the New York State Education Department and in that capacity have written questions for the Earth Science Regents exam and have sat on various committees charged with the development of the written exam and the performance exam. I have served as a New York State Mentor in Earth Science and Biology and have mentored many New York City teachers in my school and in the position of High School Science staff developer for my district. In addition, for several years, I taught a graduate meteorology course for the federal government under the auspices of the National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration (NOAA). I am New York State certified in Regents Earth Science, Chemistry, Biology, and General Science, grades 7 to 12.
The methods I employ in my tutoring are the same as those which I employ in classroom teaching. I try to make the lesson interesting and engage the student in the lesson and in his/her own achievement. I foster critical thinking by deemphasizing memorization and guiding the student to thinking the problem through, and understanding the steps and concepts required to arrive at a solution. Some things, of course, must be memorized, but to my mind, that really should never be all that learning is about. Investigation, exploration, and analysis achieve far better results, and also helpful is relating concepts in science to experiences and events the student is familiar with.
I'm invested in my student's success and make myself available for questions or problems outside of our tutoring time. The student's success is my success and both are important to me.
