I am Pre-kindergarten to Sixth grade certified elementary school teacher through the Board of Education City of NY. I reside in the Bronx, NY area. I have a love for vocal music and dramatic arts. I love to travel and spend my vacation time by the ocean. I love to swim and shop. I also love to read and write. I am presently working on a children's story book, and hope to have it finished and published within the year.
I have been an educator in the Bronx for over 27 years. I enjoy teaching immensely! On-line learning has been one of my key forms of educating students. I am presently a mentor teacher, educating and training new and veteran teachers alike in the area of being effective teachers.
I am also a reading specialist, targeting at risk, special needs students through an effective reading fluency and comprehension program called Reader's Theater. I have used my gifts and talents in the area of Musical Theater to reach students who struggle academically in all subject areas. In my years of experience, I have used the art of musical theater as an effective tool to reach and teach all students. I have used the Reader's Theater program for students in grades K-5. The end results have been quite successful! Students not only improved their reading, writing, vocabulary, phonics, comprehension and fluency skills, but improved in their self-esteem as aspiring students, who achieve to be life-long learners.
I am also the school's librarian, and have had the amazing opportunity to provide teachers, students and parents with an array of pertinent resources, media and reading material, in all genres to meet their academic and literacy needs.
I have also had the wonderful opportunity of reaching and teaching English to second language learners. As a second language educator, I have taught native Spanish Speaking adults and young students alike to gain literacy and proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. I am also an Academic Intervention Service Provider for students in grades 3-5. I target below average students and provide them with test-taking strategies and reading skills to both meet the academic standards and pass the NY State examinations in reading and math. These students have not only passed their state exams, but have developed such a desire to perform better in their academic yearly progress.
I also direct a Musical Theater after-school program (three days out of the week) for students in grades 2-5. These students have taken on the art of reading and writing their own scripts, while receiving theater art history and performance skills. Over the past three years these students have performed such plays as Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Annie and the Wizard of Oz. This year these amazing and talented students will perform Beauty and the Beast.
Two years ago, I obtained my doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D) from the University of Phoenix Online. This honorable accolade has afforded me the opportunity to empower other educators to help struggling students in all content areas. I am a firm believer that all students can learn when given the proper tools to achieve. My educational philosophy is rooted in providing students with an equitable, quality education, while empowering them to take ownership of their own education. When students are empowered to reach their fullest potential, they will meet all expected, mandated city and state academic standards; no matter what their academic struggles may be at the time. I also believe that empowering teachers and parents to be major stakeholders in the learning community is extremely important; in helping students meet their expected learning goals.
Teaching is my craft! Being a scholar, practitioner and leader is my on-going personal goal. Tutoring students who need just an extra push in meeting their own personal and academic goals is what I strive to achieve. Mentoring them and encouraging them to be life-long learners and leaders will forever be my mantra. I love teaching! But what I love most is the look on my student's face when they have reached an "Ahh-Ha" moment! Nothing in the world can satisfy me more than witnessing a student's learning success! This is my greatest satisfaction and overall gift as a contributor to servicing those who are greatest in my community...CHILDREN!
I want to personally thank you in advance for reading my brief bio and look forward to learning more about you and/or your child in the near future. Best of luck in your academic search for the best tutor. I hope to be given the opportunity to work along side of you and your child to help enhance his or her educational needs.
