Hello, Students and Parents. You are here because you are seeking assistance for yourself or a family member in studying biology, microbiology, and/or passing the Living Environment regents exam. I have experience tutoring for this exam as well as teaching experience within New York City charter schools, with students of varying ability. I am certified by New York State in Biology and have a Master's Degree in Biology with a concentration in Microbiology. Furthermore, I have held laboratory technician positions within educational and research institutions within NYC.
I have also taken courses designed to help students with reading and writing. So, I can provide all around assistance, from understanding science to helping students understand and answer questions and essays.
Beyond providing actual academic assistance, it is the job of the teacher or tutor to tailor the instruction to the student's interest. While time consuming, I have found that this is the most productive and rewarding way,for all parties,to teach difficult material as it provides a link that will help student retention and recollection of subject matter.
During my college career, I had the opportunity to take numerous anatomy and physiology courses both for science and non-science/nursing majors. These courses were in addition to my areas of interest and provided a well-rounded background in Biology. Subsequent to these studies, I have had the opportunity to teach and tutor anatomy and physiology as a substitute teacher in New York City.
I earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Lehman College/City University of New York. Upon receiving teaching certification in NY, I have taught students of varying abilities throughout the New York City area. This included work with at-risk students in both the Bronx and Yonkers. Many of these students needed help with Living Environment regents preparation and my methods included practice with previous exams and providing exam taking tips as well as covering subject matter.
I have taken numerous civil service exams which measure general knowledge, especially in math and English, as the GED does. I am also a college graduate and former employee of CUNY and familiar with the disadvantages facing GED students as many of my co-workers and staff came from such a background.
Following completion of my undergraduate studies, I began work towards and earned a Master's Degree in Biology with a concentration in Microbiology from Lehman College. Just prior to graduation, I obtained a full-time job as a microbiology lab technician for New York University School of Dentistry. Duties there included assisting students with their research.
During my studies towards NYS certification, I took courses geared towards literacy. These classes covered both the traditional form of reading and writing and use of computers to enhance these activities. Furthermore, I have always excelled in reading, from my elementary school days (where I was reading material 6 years above my grade level.)
Reading and writing go hand in hand. Literacy courses taken during my studies for teaching certification covered both of these activities. In addition to this formal work, colleagues and students have come to me for assistance in writing. Very often, they were unsure of their compositions as they were not native English speakers. My approach is a friendly, supportive one that is based on reading a composition and making suggestions as to possible changes and the tools that one may use to strengthen their writing. At no point have I ever said that the wording or grammar was wrong. This sends incorrect and uncompassionate information to the author.
