I enjoy math and have taught and tutored it and science for over 20 years in college and in the public schools of NYC. My love for teaching math happened when I realized my ability to make it plain and understandable to people who had enormous math anxiety. My students come from a very diverse population and range in age, with varying backgrounds and knowledge of math. Therefore, I actively teach and encourage my students to express their answers algebraically, graphically or by drawing pictures and in word sentences, as needed.
My patient, polite and easy-going manner coupled with my ability to model various methods for understanding and “seeing” things, accentuates my success as a teacher and tutor. My teaching strategies include modeling with varied teaching methods and giving a mixed review of problems. In turn, I always have the student model and explain in their own words what they've learned, showing their process for deriving an answer. In this way, I know that they fully understand and will hopefully accomplish learning other math concepts more easily.
I am fulfilled the most about teaching math when students who do not like it, recognize their ability to learn it well. That they may gain a better appreciation for their ability to do it and perhaps use it, hopefully encourages their love for learning, especially with math. My daughter only had two tutoring sessions with Ms. Joyce and we love her! She is patient, very professional and was able to assess some of the issues they need to work on right away. She also makes sure that Salima understands whatever they working on before moving to the next problem. My daughter is already confident about doing better on her exam this week! We are going to continue working with her and I would definitely recommend Ms. Joyce to anyone who needs help with math.
She is terrific at working with teens and helping them understand their math dilemmas. Joyce also happens to be a gracious, warm, very smart woman. She's got great 'karma'.
Excellent tutor for my 12th grader, who needed to improve on her integrated algebra. Joyce is very patient, professional and easy to reach by phone. My daughter loves her. I will absolutely recommend her. Thank you for your help.
Joyce is absolutely amazing!! Words cannot express how grateful we are to have found such a great tutor. My nephew was struggling with geometry and Joyce came to his rescue and taught him the tools that were needed to pass the Regents exam. She was so patient and caring. Joyce was always so prepared and thorough in her explanation of the math lessons for each session. She took the time to explain the math concepts in such great detail and in a manner that my nephew was able to understand and learn. She demonstrated this with such patience and care. After each math lesson, Joyce would give you an update as to what was covered, the areas of strength and areas that needed improvement. She would give assignments that were reviewed during the following session. She was so dedicated. My nephew simply loved her!! She gave him the confidence he needed. Joyce was also very responsible and always on time. She was truly a delight to have!! Thank you Joyce, you are truly a wonderful tutor!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With a bachelors degree in Chemistry from Carnegie-Mellon and graduate study in math education and literacy, I have taught for more than 20 years with students transitioning in to college level math and in high school.
