I am a patient, understanding and knowledgeable teacher and counselor, who understands the importance of making learning fun! I have been a community volunteer tutor for more than ten years, as well as a student ambassador in college to new students getting to know the learning community. I am experienced in teaching English as a second language to Spanish speaking individuals, in school and in my community. In my counselor job, I have also tutored individuals in preparation for their GED exams. I am a writer and have studied journalism in my undergraduate years, making me proficient in English composition, grammar and reading and writing, also an excellent proofreader.

Vocabulary

Nothing makes reading more fun than to have a clear understanding of what is being said. That is where proper use of words and understanding the meaning behind those words make a huge difference. Teaching the meaning, the pronunciation and the proper use of words using word games will help students, learn, explore and improve language skills.

Reading

As a writer and adult student I understand the importance being able to read, more importantly to comprehend what one reads. Reading opens up the doors to a world of adventure in learning that last a lifetime.

The value of reading comprehension is taught to the student with various techniques that include, drawing inferences from passages read, understand the scope of reading passages, recalling details of passages and understanding the meaning of vocabulary words

I am proficient in the areas of writing skills, especially as it relates to the English placement tests. Other areas of proficiency includes, English composition, basic literature studies and creative dramatics, which includes having students, take part in story-telling or dramatization as a means of improving their reading and communications skills, which furthers their understanding of basic English.

Proofreading

Proofreading means examining your text carefully to find and correct typographical errors and mistakes in grammar, style, and spelling. Before proofreading a paper the focus, organization, and development of the piece of work needs to be completed. SAT Reading

Learning to speak comes naturally as children are exposed to language from the time of birth, reading and writing however, needs to be taught, in a systematic and repetitive manner. Academic success at any age is achieved when the child as they grow into adulthood is given the opportunity to practice these skills. Taking one small step at a time, I tutor the student in parts of speech, the sounds of speech, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and text comprehension.
