ESL/ESOL

The majority of people in my family are ESL. I am a first generation Italian-American, my father and his siblings as well as my grandparents on both sides are immigrants from italy. I have grown up helping all of them in English and now I wish to expand my services to people I am not related to as well. Being in such a strong position of understanding for ESL individuals I feel obliged to helping others who have the same struggles as my loved ones.

There is no harder task than learning another language fluently. I speak three myself, so if there is anyone who can truly understand both the difficulties and rewards that are associated with taking on such a strenuous task, it's me.

As I mentioned, I am around immigrants and people who are ESL everyday, I see how they struggle to preform arguably the most difficult and respectable of tasks; function in a language, a culture, and an environment that is not their own. One that is completely foreign to them. I'd like to think that I make there lives a little bit easier by helping them whenever possible with their english, and I'd like to extend, to you, the same opportunity.

Italian

I was raised in a strictly Italian home and have been speaking Italian since I was 3 years old. The only time English has ever been spoken in my home was when there was non-Italian speaking company over. I have been traveling to Italy since I was 1 year old. Most of my family is still located in Italy. On top of my personal connections to the Italian language and culture, I have been studying Italian formally for six years. At the high school level I studied for three years and in my Senior year I began studying at college level. Between then and now, my Sophomore year in college, I have taken 4 semesters of college level instruction. I have extensive background in tutoring Italian, I have been tutoring students at all levels in Italian since I was in the 8th grade; going on 8 years now.

The difference between me and a lot of other tutors on this site, is that I have the experience to bring THREE different perspectives to the table that others cannot.

A lot of the other tutors on this site have been teaching for so long that they can't possibly remember what it was like to be a student, or more specifically they can't remember a time that they didn't understand the Passato Prossimo or the Trapassato. I, however, am still a student. Therefore I see confused students everyday and even remember the feeling of confusion when new points of grammar were being introduced to me. I know what students enjoy doing in class and how they enjoy learning because I am still a student, likewise I know what students hate that professors do and avoid at all costs doing these things. I can make the lessons interesting and relatable.

The second perspective that I can bring is as an instructor. As I mentioned before, I am going on my 8th year tutoring kids in Italian, but I also teach a class at college. Each Italian class meets four times a week and I am responsible for the instruction of one of these sessions; alone.

The third, and final, perspective that I bring to the table is that of a native speaker, someone who grew up in the culture and speaking the language. I can exposure which people who simply learned in school aren't even aware exist.

Reading

When I was younger I used to hate reading. But the truth behind that was simply that I was never any good at it and nobody seemed to care enough to take the time to sit down and teach me to do it. I became a reading and writing tutor because I remember how it felt to struggle so much and have nowhere to turn, I set out to do this portion to, hopefully, help other people who find themselves in this situation. I WILL take the time to explain it to you, and to help you, and I will not get up until you understand it.

Spanish

I have been speaking spanish since I was 10 years old. It started with friends of the family, and in middle school, age 12, I began formally studying it and have been doing so ever since. I have declared a Spanish minor in college.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
