Why should you choose me over any of the other tutors?
Well the answer to that question is a short and simple one. I am the most unique tutor that you will find here.
Most tutors have been teachers or students but few have ever been both at the same time. Currently I teach 1 out of 4 sessions a week to a level 200 Italian class. I am still a sophomore in college, a full-time student. Since the 8th grade I have been tutoring part-time in Italian, and Spanish. I am going on my 8th year tutoring and teaching. I have done individual lessons, small group lessons, class sized study sessions, and I even have experience in a formal classroom setting.
I have an extensive background in all of my subject areas.
Italian:
I was raised in a strictly italian home, and have been speaking italian since I was 3 years old. I have three years of formal study at the high school level and four semesters of college level experience. I have declared an italian minor in college.
Spanish:
I have been speaking spanish since I was 10 years old. It started with people I knew, and in middle school, age 12, I began formally studying it and have been doing so ever since. I have declared a Spanish minor in college.
Math:
In grade school I was always a very advanced math student. In by the time I graduated high school I had taken as much as three years of calculus.
ESL:
I am a first generation American. My father and his family, as well as the older generations of my mother's family-grandparents, great-aunts and uncles etc- are all Italian immigrants. I have been around people who are ESL my entire life and beyond having the utmost respect and empathy for people who find themselves trying to learn english, I have a very solid understanding of the struggles and obstacles involved; having watched so much of my family struggle with the same obstacles.
Reading and Writing:
When I was younger I used to hate reading and writing. But the truth behind that was simply that I was never any good at it and nobody seemed to care enough to take the time to sit down and teach me to do it. I became a reading and writing tutor because I remember how it felt to struggle so much and have nowhere to turn, I set out to do this portion to, hopefully, help other people who find themselves in this situation. I will take the time to explain it to you, and to help you, and I will not get up until you understand it.
Tutoring and Teaching methods
This, I'm sure, is a big decision-making point for a lot of you. Many tutors and teachers subscribe to different teaching styles, methods, and or philosophies. I, however, do not. I individualize my lessons for each and every student I teach. No two students are the same and therefore cannot be taught the same. In school I was always the kid who was confused because the teacher was explaining the topic in a way that didn't make sense to me, or using examples I couldn't relate to. I was constantly struggling and constantly trying not to fall behind. In my experience as both a student, a teacher, and a tutor I see that this is inevitable in a classroom setting. You can't possibly explain every topic in a way that everyone will understand; you'd get nothing done. This is the job of the tutor. I see tutoring as personal teaching, the job of the tutor parallels the job of the teacher. The only difference being the level of attention the student gets. If you are learning a language and you are a strong math student but not so strong in english, you will not understand so easily the literary references and the explanations. That is why in a case like this I would explain it to you in a way that might parallel your instruction in mathematics. I don't believe that any one person is smarter than another, the only difference is how well and or how effectively something is explained to different individuals. So I guess to answer the question, my teaching method consists of individualized lessons.
