I am a learning specialist with over 14 years working with students in college. For the past 5 years I have specialized in working with students with learning disabilities. The students I see often need help with reading comprehension, essay writing, editing, research writing, study skills, time management, stress management, career goals, etc. Prior to that I worked as a counselor for students who were placed on academic probation and experiencing difficulties in their overall performance. I also teach Speech Ccommunication and Psychology courses on the college level. It is my strong belief that all students can learn; however it is important to teach according to their learning style, temperament, and motivation toward learning. This is the job of a learning specialist. For some students it is just a matter of getting organized, for others it could be a learning disability, and others may just need to enhance their skills, for example in reading fluency and comprehension. When students struggle academically, they become frustrated and lose their motivation to learn. Fortunately with the proper assistance, they can overcome these challenges and often experience higher self-esteem, self-efficacy and motivation to learn.
