I have taught in the school system and have tutored for the past 16 years. I have experienced first hand the frustration students have felt as they struggled with math. However, working in the school system I was limited in what I could do about this, so I decided that my talent was better served providing one-on-one tutoring. I tutor K-12 math and English.

Math is my absolute favorite subject to tutor. I love watching a student go from struggling with math to achieving high marks. Many children struggle with math from the very beginning. Math is a progressive study based on early fundamentals. Once a child learns one concept, the next concept builds upon the one he or she just learned. Every math concept builds upon the previous one, so if a child does not have a solid understanding of one particular concept, he or she will struggle with what follows after. For this reason math gets harder for these kids every school year.

To help these children, I go back to the basics to see where a student got lost. I help students grasp basic concepts of math that will apply to life skills such as paying bills, managing a budget and other necessary math-related skills. I use my expertise in math to help them improve their grades significantly, conquer their fear of math and boost their confidence.

I have been told by many students I have tutored that I explain things differently than their teachers and they understand the material better. I strive to explain concepts in a way that students will understand and remember. I strive to help students have a better experience with math.

I taught math and English at the Allen School of Health Sciences, a training school for medical assistants, and I taught GED math and English reading and writing at LaGuardia Community College.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1 for 16 years to individual students as well as groups. I've also worked as a high school teacher's assistant in the math department for 5 years. Algebra is my favorite topic to teach in math. My students have told me that my teaching style is very different from their teachers' and they understand it better the way I teach it. I always look for different ways to explain math to students because not all students learn the same way. I cater to their individual needs. I have helped students who were at the point of failing pass math as well as the Regents exam.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored basic, elementary math and English for the past 16 years. I've done test prep in both subjects. In math, I teach students techniques in learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percents, algebra and geometry. I also teach converting units, plotting points on a graph, proportions, and other areas.

In English, I teach the parts of speech, subject/predicate, subject-verb agreement, punctuation rules, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills.

GED

I currently teach GED math to Deaf adults at LaGuardia Community College. I also teach basic math and English to adults who do not have a high school diploma or GED and must take an entrance exam in order to enter a medical assistant training program.

Probably the hardest thing about doing word problems is taking the words and translating them into a workable mathematical equation. For this reason many students fear and hate doing them. It can be confusing to know where to start and how to go about figuring out the answer. However, there are ways of breaking down a word problem that makes it clearer and easier to solve.
