Dear Prospective Student:
I can help you achieve your academic or professional goals. Currently, I am only working with clients who need editing help - both with the content and mechanics - of graduate school, college, or high school level essays, projects or dissertations and any business-related writing: letters, resumes, presentations and the like. I work via telephone consultation and exchanged documents.
If this works for you, read on.
I am a happily married instructor with a Ph.D. in literature and creative writing from the University of Houston. Moreover, I have taught for over 13 years at either the university or high school level. My students find me educational and entertaining. (For university students, I am well-versed in literary theory and cultural studies.)
My tutoring sessions connect academics to “the real world.” I incorporate concepts from the other disciplines into my lessons so my students have a bigger, wider, deeper, and stronger contextual net of knowledge that can catch and hold more information.
The skills needed for reading and writing are no different from those needed when we were hunters and gatherers. While hunting, we needed to remain calm, stay aware of our environment, and interpret the signs we encounter. Reading is no different. One needs the same sustained concentration while hunting down the meaning of a text or crafting one's thoughts into an essay.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Many of the Career Development skills include those such as writing well, the organization and execution of presentations, public speaking, interview skills, and resume and cover letter work that I have already successfully completed through Wyzant.
Finally, I am a classroom teacher and clearly understand how to market and sell ideas to an unwilling audience.
Throughout my educational career - at the high school and university level - I have counseled students when they, as current college students, needed to organize themselves to transfer to a better university or apply for a graduate school program; at the high school level, I have assisted hundreds of students in navigating the college application process. I currently offer a course called College Quest, where I help both students and their parents understand how to frame the college quest, organize their paperwork, pick a potential major, and prioritize their applications. I do this professionally using my vast experience with students who are sometimes unsure about which are the crucial question they need to pose to themselves as they begin this quest.
It is unbelievable. More people are afraid of public speaking than death itself. However, every organization – private, public, profit, or not-for-profit – hungers for employees who can stand up and champion that organization’s products and ideas.
Excellent public speaking skills are a low cost, soft innovation to your professional or academic skill set that can lead to great rewards. It will set you apart from your peers in both professional and social settings. And, learning these skills is far more simple than you may imagine.
I have extensive experience in teaching public speaking, not only in the classroom, but also in the workplace. If you allow me, I can teach you solid, basic skills and “hacks” (as computer gamers call them) to improve your oral presentation skills immediately. I will teach you how to write and revise your speech, build an effective PowerPoint, and rehearse your presentation in just a few hours of teaching time.
Let me coach you so you can master the boardroom or the classroom
My SAT Reading Prep teaches the student how to read critically - this means marking the text for its key transition words, its claims, and rhetorical strategies. This allows the student to work with the passage at hand and score well.
I have over 20 years experience in theatre as an actor, writer and director. I trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre by Richard Pinter. I studied Improvisation with Paul Sills among others. I have studied playwrighting with Edward Albee and Eduardo Machado. As well I have performed with noted theatre companies in Minneapolis, MN, and New York City.
Additionally, I have taught "Introduction to Theatre" at the university level. As well, in my college composition classes, my students were required to read and attend the campus productions at the University of Houston in conjunction with my Rhetoric Class. Finally, I am well-versed in theatre as literature, especially the world of Shakespeare and modern 20th century American greats like O'Neill, Williams, Miller, and Mamet.
