Hello! My name is Rebecca, and I'm looking forward to studying English with you!

I work with professionals, college students, and new English speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds, helping executives prepare presentations for their jobs, coaching leaders on their public speaking and speech writing, and preparing people for conversations, debates, or tests on specialized and technical subjects in English.

I've taught English in junior high schools in Japan, as well as ESL and English speech classes for adults in NYC, and assisted college students in preparing for their TOEFL exams. Before my teaching experience, I worked as a counselor for children and adults from diverse backgrounds in New York.

I am TEFL certified and my master's degrees are in psychology (learning theory) and social work. I am also a competent speaker of Japanese and Spanish.

I believe that I've developed a good understanding of the unique challenges of coming to English from another language, particularly languages with very different grammar or speech patterns. Being aware of what aspects of learning are likely to be more frustrating or difficult has been very helpful in assisting my students in identifying problem areas and minimizing their frustration with themselves. Confidence is a critical aspect of learning English-the confidence to practice often, without fear of embarrassment or shame, makes learning faster and more enjoyable.

I believe that being able to speak, read, and write English confidently and well is one of the best predictors of professional and academic success-there is almost no place in our modern world where strong communication skills are not essential to survival. No matter what your line of work or subject of study, being able to write effective reports and explain ideas will always be necessary.

Having a better understanding of the language that surrounds us in the United States every day can change our lives. When we can communicate our feelings, ideas, and important information clearly and effectively, we can take control of our own success. Let me help you get there!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL is the cornerstone of my teaching experience. Even when I worked as a mental health professional, I assisted many of my clients in adjusting to English-speaking life and building survival language skills.

Since earning TEFL certification, I've helped children and adults improve their school performance, prepare for the TOEFL exams, increase English conversation skills, and tutored in general reading and writing ability.

I also taught in a junior high school in Japan, where a wide variety of English skills were needed- speech, grammar, spelling, and writing- and have a good understanding of what challenges students from non-Western languages face when beginning to study English.

Public Speaking

I have coached adult ESL students in accent reduction and clear/loud speech, as well as moderated/coached students in Japan for district-wide English language speech contests.

Writing

I have completed several graduate degrees- psychology and social work- that have given me a wealth of experience in writing academically, both for research and basic report purposes. I've also tutored students from high school to university levels in the basic theory and practice of composition- constructing good paragraphs, assessing the flow of your writing, etc.

Creative writing is also something I particularly enjoy teaching, especially in the context of new English learners. Learning to write on topics of interest is one of the best ways to quickly improve your English grammar and communication skills!
