Hello! My name is Rebecca, and I'm looking forward to studying English with you!
I've taught English in junior high schools in Japan, as well as individual tutoring of junior high and high school students right here in Queens. I've also taught ESL and English speech classes for adults in NYC, and assisted college students in preparing for their TOEFL exams. Before my teaching experience, I have worked as a counselor for children and adults from diverse backgrounds in New York.
I am TEFL certified and my Masters degrees are in psychology (learning theory) and social work. I am also a competent speaker of Japanese and Spanish.
I believe that I've developed a good understanding of the unique challenges of coming to English from another language, particularly languages with very different grammar or speech patterns. Being aware of what aspects of learning are likely to be more frustrating or difficult has been very helpful in assisting my students in identifying problem areas, and minimizing their frustration with themselves. Confidence is a critical aspect of learning English- the confidence to practice often, without fear of embarrassment or shame, makes learning faster and more enjoyable.
I believe that being able to speak, read and write English confidently and well is one of the best predictors of professional and academic success- there is almost no place in our modern world where strong communication skills are not essential to survival. No matter what your line of work or subject of study, being able to write effective reports and explain ideas will always be necessary.
Having a better understanding of the language that surrounds us in the United States every day can change our lives. When we can communicate our feelings, ideas, and important information clearly and effectively, we can take control of our own success. Let me help you get there!
