Hi Fellow Students & Parents,

My name is Maryann. I am a life-long learner and always expanding my knowledge base, even though I have a Post Master’s and NYS certification in N-6 teaching and as an administrator. I was a tenured teacher in the Baldwin schools, a central office administrator in Suffolk County, adjunct at local colleges and mentor in multi-cultural Hempstead. Presently, I am the owner of a consulting firm providing creative program design, evaluation, and editing and writing services to schools and non-profit agencies. I love my work, but miss the personal satisfaction I get by working one-on-one directly with students and witnessing first hand their “A-HA” moments.

My tutoring approach is to use real world connections and interdisciplinary content, as each subject is inter-related. Students learn to apply, evaluate, analyze, and synthesize information needed to become critical thinkers and problem-solvers. I use supportive Internet resources, as well as hands-on materials for maximum understanding, reinforcement and enrichment. Using a multi-sensory approach accommodates the varied learning styles of each student. Learning comes alive, meaningful and is fun for my students.

I am very excited to return to tutoring and help each student reach his or her potential, gain confidence and experience success. I prefer tutoring in a local library setting, but I am always available to chat with you about your child’s progress. If you are looking for a warm, knowledgeable teacher, committed to working with your child for any pre-school –grade 6 subject area, please consider me as your tutor. Looking forward to hearing from you and working with your child!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I spent seventeen years as a successful entrepreneurial leader working with schools and non-profit agencies. I was coordinator and mentor for job development, community service and character development programs for at risk youth and adults. Previously I was a certified resume writer and interview skills coach. I have a certificate in Executive Coaching.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have permanent NYS Certification in N-6. I was a teacher in the Baldwin Public Schools for fifteen years: High-Risk Kindergarten, First, Second and Fourth Grades. I am a NYS Certified District Office Administrator and worked in that area for several years. I am familiar with the Common Core Standards.

Phonics

I have the ability to explain what phonics is and why we need it to learn to read, write and speak: the relationship between the letters and the sounds they make. I have used several phonics-based programs to teach students to read, but the best and most fun strategy for students is a hands-on, game approach. Teaching phonics gives students a solid reading foundation that will serve them throughout their life to decode any word they may encounter.

Public Speaking

As an educational professional and entrepreneur, I completed several public speaking courses and learned to effectively deliver a message, present information and engage a variety of audiences of all sizes. I have presented in educational settings, conferences and community outreach projects. I prepare my students to be able to accomplish this same skill by researching and organizing their thoughts in a compelling, yet creative manner with the make-up of the audience in mind. Some of the techniques we explore and incorporate are ice- breakers, visual aids, and sound bytes. I have also delivered professional development courses focusing on verbal and non-verbal communication to enhance professional and interpersonal communication.

Study Skills

As an entrepreneur and grant writer, I have mastered the necessary elements of study skills: time management, organization, reading for meaning, efficiently conducting research, note and test taking strategies, and setting goals. I have guided students of all ages in these techniques and seen their successful implementation to not only academics, but also everyday life situations. It’s truly rewarding to see them grow!
