I am a NYS Certified Teaching Assistant with abundant patience and experience teaching children how to grasp the concepts they need to succeed academically. I have spent countless hours with my own child with learning disabilities, who has become a self-sufficient learner and is now a senior in college with a GPA of 3.5. I believe that the academic excellence of each of my 5 children is attributable to my individualized involvement in their learning from a young age. I have studied the masters of human development and learning; Piaget, Montessori. I have been a "Montessori Parent" for 36 years. I believe in providing a multi-modality environment for learning. Concepts need to be introduced concretely in order for abstract thought to develop and flourish. Creativity, practicality and perseverance all contribute to the learning process. I am, myself considerably a life-long learner. Curiosity always leads to discovery. I understand the diversity of learning styles and can ascertain the best approach to learning.

I have a background as a registered nurse. In hospital nursing, I always gravitated towards patient and family teaching assignments, as well as being a preceptor of new nurses. I also worked for 14 years as a school nurse. I offered extra help to struggling students on my own time. There is nothing that compares to seeing the joy in a child's when they finally "get it".

I recently worked as a Special Education Aide in an elementary school and was unfortunately "let go" along with 67 others, due to budget constraints. I am eager to have a positive influence in the life of children.

For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a NY Certified Teaching Assistant. My experience consists of tutoring my own five children through K-6th grade. One of my children has learning disabilities. I provided the insight for his school to help him learn more effectively. He achieved a regents diploma and an AA degree so far. I have experience as an Elementary Special Education Aide in a public school where I provided one-to-one instructional support.

Nursing

I am an NYS Registered Professional Nurse going on 30 years. I have precepted several nurses during my hospital career. I also created written Nursing Protocols for the facility, pertaining specifically to accepted musing practices and taught those practices in an in-service setting. I continue my own nursing education by obtaining Continuing Education Units frequently. I am committed to providing excellence in nursing care.

Phonics

I am a NYSTCE Certified Teaching Assistant.

I began 36 years ago practicing the Montessori method of teaching phonics where each letter represents a sound before the letter name is introduced. Diagraphs are learned as separate entities. Proper pronunciation of letter sounds is introduced by playing games. I continue to engage in Montessori course work.

Special Needs

Having a Special Needs child of my own, I have done extensive research into learning styles and cognition. I have discovered memorization and mind mapping skills which can benefit the learner. I do not refer to people with special learning needs as disabled. I believe they are Able, it is just a matter of discovering how best to teach them. That takes individual instruction, time and patience, all of which, I offer. "Finding the key is the first step in unlocking the door of success". I have been employed as a Special Ed. Aide and have been influential in helping children makes strides in learning.
