My name is Marykay. I have a twelve year old daughter who loves to cheerlead and also loves our cats, Tiger and Romeo.
My background is in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education from Cazenovia College and St. Bonaventure University. I have a Master's Degree in Reading Education K-12 from Suny Cortland. I have dedicated my life to teaching children while using a hands on learning approach. Each student has different learning styles: auditory learners, visual learners, tactile learners. Some students need repetition of a new skill, others just need modeling so they can process a skill easier. My tutoring sessions are modified to meet each child's individualized need.
I am a firm believer in the "hands on learning" approach. Read it in print, use manipulatives to spell it out, use rhyming to remember it and make learning fun, sing it with music, clap it, stomp it out, engage the child's body with their brain to make a complete package to learn a desired skill. Every student can learn, they just need the right teacher to believe in them and make learning fun.
I have a great deal of experience in so many areas of education. I started as a before and after school director while teaching preschool during the day. I was a daily substitute teacher for four years for ages Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade as an on call basis. During that time I gained strong experience with homebound tutoring, grades 7-12. I coordinated a homebound afterschool classroom a challenging experience, yet very successful. I have experience teaching homebound sessions at many different schools, fourth grade, sixth grade and grades seven to twelvth grade. My favorite was a medical homebound position in which I did music therapy and read poetry to calm and relax my student. He wasn't able to walk or talk and was wheel chair bound. My most unique homebound position was a student age 14 who had given birth to a baby. I had just had my baby and taught her life skills of how to care for a baby while trying to finish math homework. Each student gives me a piece of them that I carry with me throughout my life.
I started as a teaching assistant substitute with my district. After six months, I was offer a first grade position. I taught first grade for one year and was offer a Pre-k classroom job. I found my passion and the job became apart of who I was. I was able to make the world a better place, one child at a time. Although I am capable of tutoring many different levels, I enjoy the pre-literacy, immergent reader stage. I strongly believe in the process of early education, pre-reading and writing, immersing students in letters, numbers, words, rhyming, reading great books daily, scribbling/writing in journals, ditacting words children say so they gain knowledge that words have meaning and convey a message when written, expressing yourself through artwork and so much more. The beginning of a child's education is very important. I specialize in using different strategies to strengthen fine motor skills, gross motor skills, processing/listening skills, self help skills, and give them the confidence to explore and learn through play. Children in early elementary grades can learn through play also. Writing about your favorite television show or writing a thank you for a gift are fun ways in incorporate and strengthen skills used in daily life. A game of go fish can remind of student of numbers or colors they may have forgotten. I have so many examples and not enough minutes in my day to describe them all to you.
My job as your child's tutor is to make him or her a life long learner. I will give your child the skills they need to succeed in the classroom and with their daily routine. I will meet with you to find what support your child needs, what is happening in the classroom and what the parents are following up with at home. Together we will create a plan for your child to success. Let me know what skills need to be worked on an I will help your child accomplish their goals. I thank you for taking the time to read about me and look forward to meeting you in the near future.
In the 10 years I have worked in my city school district, I have worked with many children with ADD/ADHD. As a teacher I spend time getting to know the child very well. I will spend time with the child, talk with the parents and teachers to see what current strategies are in place to help the child communicate their needs while trying to stay on task. For example, I am a preschool teacher. During circle time a strategy I use for an unfocused child is to place they close to the teacher. I also give them their own mat on the floor to give them their own boundaries from their friends. I use that child as a helper during the lesson, ask him questions, use props to help him focus and even have been known to let the child take a turn "retelling the story" to the group during story time. His brain has to stay engaged to focus and learn. I create a flow map picture schedule for him to look at so he knows what comes next in our organized schedule.
Each tutoring session would be planned out and organized so the child knows what comes next. I break our sessions into smaller chunks of information or mini lessons to make it easier for the child to remember what objectives have been taught. I make it fun and praise and use positive reinforcement as needed. I try to focus on the positive that the child can do, and guide him with the material he is still working on. I am confident I can successfully tutor a child with ADD/ADHD.
I taught for 12 years in a city school district and worked with many students with reading issues and used many strategies to break through their learning needs. Several of my students had Dyslexia and I was successful in helping them understand clearly what they read. I am confident I can help this student to succeed in school and in life.
I am a New York State Certified teacher in Reading K-12 and Elementary Education N-6. I have over 15 years of experience as a teacher and taught children math, reading, writing and social skills. I have tutored homebound students, both medically challenged and not with great success. I tutored teenage moms and taught English to a Korean Family. I was a substitute teacher both at the high school and elementary levels and am familiar with the curriculum taught. I taught first grade for one year and preschool for eight years. I am confident I will make any student a life long learner.
I have a great deal of experience teaching English As A Second Language to children and adults. My success rate of preparing my students for situations in everyday life, for job interviews and to test to the next level of the ESL test has been very good. I have taught a Korean family learn English for one year, a Korean RIT student prepare for a video conference job interview (which he got in California!), taught an adult ESL class focusing on vocabulary, grammar, writing and speaking, worked with ESL students daily while subbing in our local schools. I am confident I am fully prepared to help any student strengthen their English skills to be success testing, interviewing or in life skills. Many of my homebound education students often spoke another language first before learning English with me. I am dedicated to teaching my English language learners how to communicate better with practice and strategies to breakdown learning.
I have my master's degree in Reading Education K-12, my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and my Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. I am a New York State Certified teacher and have over 15 years of teaching phonics at every level. I have worked in reading rooms at various schools, ran my own tutoring business, taught first grade for one year, and recently used phonics on a daily basis while teaching pre-k for eight years. My knowledge on the subject level of phonics will increase and strengthen a students confidence level. They will be more fluent readers with my help.
While attending Cazenovia College, I took a public speaking class and became the instructor's adjunct instructor for one semester. I will show you strategies of how to relax while giving a clear and precise speech. You will feel confident and prepared with my help.
I have worked in a city school district for 10 years with special needs children and children with their own learning styles. In our room we house both special needs children with regular education students. We would work together with our team of special education teachers to develop strategies including an individual assessment plan with educational goals for each student. As a teacher I will find what the child's strengths are and adapt the give curriculum to meet that child's needs. I would work closely communicating with the child's current teacher as well as the parents to develop a plan that works. Every child can learn, they just learn in different ways.
I have my Master's Degree in Reading Education and taught for the Syracuse City Schools for eleven years as a first grade teacher and pre-k teacher. Throughout this time I have developed many strategies to organize my students learning, keep them organized using planners and binders, and given them many test taking and study skill strategies. For example, when doing a multiply choice test I teach process of elimination, reading all the questions before actually taking the test, and using different tricks to remember something that will be on the test. I make sure my students have their own work space so their brains can focus and recall information easily. Checklists and graphic organizers are great ways to help a student develop strong study skills.
