I am a mature adult who has retired from government and has been teaching in the public and private schools daily. I teach at all grade levels and am effective and comfortable in doing so. My Liberal Arts background prepares me well to do this. In graduate school at SUNYA I studied Criminal Justice and at Russell Sage College I studied Public Management. I am well versed to tutor you for I have worked with all types of students.I have a passion for teaching and education. Through this process we can learn together, for I do not find a day that goes by teaching others that I do not learn as well. I should add that I was an instructor of adults in government for years. You will do us both a service by choosing me to tutor you.

ASVAB

My name is Steve and I am a war veteran. As a veteran I know the importance of serving our country in the armed forces. I took the ASVAB to learn more about myself, my interests, values, talents, and abilities. You do not need to go through any lengthy preparation to take the test.I am a teacher and can help you practice for the test in Arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, mathematical knowledge, and mechanical comprehension. As a teacher I often work in a resource center of a high school with students which need help with their studies. I am effective in doing so and most students find me interesting and practical in my approach. What we do together may set you on the right course for life. It is the primary reason that I teach and tutor others. I look forward to learning with you.

Criminal Justice

My name is Steve. I would like to tutor you in Criminal Justice and would be effective in doing so. I attended one of the premier colleges in this nation for Criminal Justice and learned much about the system and how to deal with problems that plague it. I then went on to work in that system in government here and abroad. My particular interest is in policing, comparative systems, and the selection process. I have been through police academies, specialized training courses, and seminars all of which give me a well rounded approach to this complex system and the issues it addresses. The short of it is I have a passion for teaching and the right mix in this area to help you with your studies or preparation in this field. I have extensive experience teaching/ instructing all types of people. Whether you are in high school, changing careers, or in the field preparing for the future I can assist you. I look forward to taking this journey with you.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a substitute teacher who teaches daily in the public elementary schools. I teach at all grade levels and the students enjoy having me and ask me to return when I can. This is because I make the lesson interesting relating it to a story and the real world. I have a diverse background which I can draw upon to teach you. I know students do not like to read lengthy passages so I will sign off now. I know you will enjoy having me as your tutor.

English

English is my native tongue and so I am more than comfortable with it. Being comfortable with any language doesn't make one proficient in it nor able to teach it. As a teacher I walk my talk. That is I am a role model speaking and writing English in all the core subjects. An example is in order. I grade writing exams for the state. As a grader I see all the abuses of English. Students struggle to convey the message because of poor organizational skills, mechanics, and vocabulary. At the root of their problem is early on they established poor habits that have lingered on. English is reading, speaking, and writing well. As a tutor I emphasize all giving example and then calling upon the student in unique and fun ways.

ESL/ESOL

Hello, My name is Steve and I would like to work with you. I have worked with students like you in the public schools that come from different parts of the world and have trouble grasping certain subjects because of cultural barriers. Living abroad I gained an appreciation for other cultures and learned that there are a number of ways to communicate the same idea. That is try, try again. As a teacher I have taught at all grade levels and adults. I have found this interesting and my students have found me interesting. We have enjoyed working together. I hope you will chose me as your tutor.

Physical Science

I have tutored students in Physical Science with good results. It and Environmental Science are the two sciences I have a keen interest in. I do lots of outside reading in these subjects which only enriches the discussion I have with the student. I often add much to the lesson to support concepts being taught. I have no fear for this does not confuse the student but clarifies areas. A story is remembered versus facts.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is a building block for all students in the progression of math. As a teacher of Algebra, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra and Trigonometry, Statistics, and Precalculus through the 12th grade, I know the importance firsthand of mastering each level before moving on. Only yesterday I proctored a yearly exam testing 5th and 6th graders in quantitative reasoning. Prealgebra was an integral part of that exam. Dealing with the concept of a variable can be a challenge for some. I can demystify that and create resolve and thus enjoyment in math that will carry the student a long way.

Public Speaking

Communication is essential, no matter what field you study in or work in. I have found this to be true in life. Over the years I have been called on to speak before small and large groups and I can attest to the fact that you must keep practiced. The way you speak is a reflection of who you are. To be an effective speaker, just as in writing, you must be clear, concise, and accurate. Your topic must be interesting and you need to hold the listener's attention.

So as this does not become too wordy I will get to my credentials. Upon completion of graduate school I went to work for the government where I worked in management and was an instructor along the way. I was trained in Public Speaking and Presentation Skills and have delivered many different types of speeches. Since my retirement I have been teaching daily in the public schools. Many find me an interesting teacher I think because I am different and draw upon my background. It is so important to be well versed in what you speak about and my enthusiasm rings through. I believe you will enjoy having me as your tutor and want me back for other subject matter. I am sure we will work well together.

Reading

Reading is so essential to every day life. It is the way we communicate our ideas , feelings, and thoughts across the ages and the world. Our ability to read well is crucial. To read like any skill takes practice and patience.

I encourage students to read whatever interests them and then to read different styles and types of literature. Reading however, does not stand alone for it is tied to speaking and writing. So I emphasize all three in my lessons. As an avid reader myself I share what I may be reading at the moment with the student. To enrich the student's vocabulary I encourage the use of the dictionary. When the student writes assignments for me I go over structure and grammar.

What I do in the class as a teacher I do as a tutor. Students enjoy having me as a teacher or tutor for I make the lesson interesting and listen to them in more ways than one.

Regents

As one who grades Regents exams for the State I am totally familiar with what is tested for. I have graded English, Math, and Science exams. I also teach Regents courses and in so doing cover review for the Regents.

SAT Math

I teach math in middle school and high school. This includes honors sections in Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry.I am also well versed in Statistics.

As a SAT tutor in Math, I have worked with students to improve their grade and understand material that previously they did not. I have taught them to reason through problems using logic and common sense. To draw on what they know in solving problems. I cover test strategies, which applies to more than taking the SAT.

Finally, students enjoy working with me because I make the lesson interesting and memorable.

SAT Reading

Reading is the subject area which ties the three areas of the SAT together. That is one must understand what is asked for and be able to respond properly. In working with students I stress reading, speaking, and writing are inseparable.I encourage students to read as much as they can what interests them and also divergent types and styles. I strongly urge students to use a dictionary and look words up that they come across to build their vocabulary.

As an SAT tutor in reading, I have assisted students in becoming better readers. Ones who know what to look for and are organized in their approach. What is learned is useful in all their studies. I cover test strategy in this area as well.

SAT Writing

I have experience working with students preparing for the SAT. Students have gotten back to me stating they improved their test grades. I practice writing with them. We discuss test strategy and how best to utilize the 25 minutes given for this section of the test. I know this can be a challenge for many. What you learn from me will carry over to all the writing you do. As one who has been a grader of writing for the state, I know first hand what is sought. I will share this with you.

Social Studies

My name is Steve and I would like to be your tutor. One who can follow you through the years if need be. I teach social studies in the schools and enjoy it. Students find me interesting because I enrich the lesson in many ways. I do this by way of my experience, knowledge gained through "outside" reading, and input from experts in the field. This field of Social Studies/History is being added to and revised daily, being dynamic in nature. We can all relate to it, some of us more than others. The issues that are looked at are important for they stay with us as a people. I look forward to continuing the journey with you.

Sociology

My name is Steve and I would like to be your tutor for Sociology. I am particularly suited to be in that it was my undergraduate major in college and I have taken many Sociology courses some of which you may be seeking help in now. Sociology is a broad field in the behavioral sciences. One like the sciences is quantifiable and qualitative. I am well versed in theory and grounded in reality. My work experience in business, government, and community enabled me to put to use my understanding of Sociology. As a teacher I have been effective because I can draw on my background to make the lesson interesting and to an extent unforgettable. There is no harm in talking to see if I can help you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Special Needs

Hello,

My name is Steve and I would like to be your tutor. We all have needs, some different than others. I value diversity and am eager to help others achieve their goals and grow as individuals. I realize this could be a challenge but I know I am up to it. I teach in the schools at all grade levels and have taught in Special Education. I have found this especially rewarding in that small successes are so gratifying.

In living abroad I communicated with the locals and some times was not understood or did not understand them for they spoke another language. I would then say it another way and would be understood. The lesson is try and try again. Before this gets too long I will end on this note. I am a professional who has extensive experience with all types of people and I am sure we can work together and it will be an enjoyable and enriching experience for the both of us.

Study Skills

Hello, My name is Steve and I would like to be your tutor. Like the game "Name that Tune" which asks the player to do it as soon as possible I will teach you study skills that will last you a life time in as short a time as possible while being effective. I will do this because I know you want to acquire good study skills and it not cost you a lot. As a teacher I work with students daily to instill in them good habits. It takes time to break bad habits and then learn new ones. These habits carry over from subject to subject and then throughout life. This area of study skills is very important.

Something about my self before this gets too long. I was very successful in school because I learned early how to study and then was productive with my study time. I asked for help when I needed help and did not let questions go unanswered. I am trained in research and have been an investigator which calls for creativity, ingenuity, and steadfastness. I am a professional who can aid you in your quest to learn and am eager to do so. No matter what grade level or age you are I can work with you and I believe you will enjoy working with me.
