Hi, my name is Dennis and I am looking forward to being your tutor! I enjoy teaching and have had helped students achieve success through my work as a high school teacher in New York City public schools, as a private tutor, and as an SAT instructor. As a classroom teacher in Brooklyn I taught 10th grade Earth Science and Music classes. As a private tutor I worked with students from grades 2-11 in all subjects. Most recently I worked with a community center both as a volunteer tutor and as a staff SAT class instructor.

I'm currently working to open a coffee shop where I live in Astoria and would welcome the opportunity to work with youth from the community. I speak fluent Japanese, and have had the pleasure of tutoring newly-immigrated Japanese students in Columbus, OH; I welcome the opportunity to tutor English language learners.

I'm laid back and light-hearted in manner but am committed to education and work to develop lasting skills in my students.

In addition to academics I enjoy teaching beginner guitar. I've had the pleasure of teaching guitar as an add-on to private tutoring sessions and as a high school music teacher.

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.

Algebra 1

I have experience as a private math tutor for students grades 2-11.

Depending on a student's ability, pre-algebra skills may be reinforced first.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience as a private tutor working with students as early as grade 2. My focus was on their English reading and writing skills, but I helped them in all subjects. I developed a level of trust with their families that sometimes I would watch the kids when their parents left to run errands.

Elementary Math

I have experience working with young or struggling students and have a great deal of patience.

I place an emphasis on building a solid foundation of the basics and have had success conveying mathematical ideas to those who are just starting to learn them.

English

Even as a high school science and music teacher I pushed students to stretch their basic English skills.

I've taught English as an SAT instructor and also as a private tutor for newly-immigrated Japanese families.

Regardless of subject matter, there is always an opportunity and duty for the student to be mindful of their English usage.

ESL/ESOL

I've worked with English language learners throughout my career as educator, including my work as a high school teacher in Brooklyn, an SAT class instructor in Queens, and as a private tutor for Japanese families.

In Brooklyn many of my students were Caribbean speakers of Haitian Creole, and in Queens I worked with students of diverse backgrounds.

GED

I have extensive experience working with students to improve standardized testing scores.

I have experience working with NY State Regents tests, SAT, ACT, and GED content.

While I understand that the goal with standardized tests is the score, I emphasize a mastery of content as well.

Grammar

I coached grammar skills as a private English tutor for newly-immigrated Japanese families and as an SAT instructor for writing and critical reading.

Aside from possessing formal experience, I am one to note grammatical errors to my students regardless of subject matter being discussed.

Guitar

I have a music minor in college for guitar performance.

I have experience teaching beginner guitar both during private tutoring sessions and as a high school music teacher.

I also have a background in guitar-making.

Japanese

My mother is Japanese and I grew up speaking Japanese.

I speak native level Japanese and am most useful as a pronunciation and conversation coach.

Proofreading

I have extensive experience working with students from grades 2-11, and have proofread something from every single student I've had.

In addition to proofreading formally for essays, I push students to write and edit thoroughly when they write anything at all.

Relevant positions include my experience as an SAT writing and critical reading instructor and as a private English tutor.

Special Needs

I gained experience working with special-needs students as a high school teacher in New York City public schools. In the high-need community where I served, many students were considered to have special needs or to be learning disabled. I worked with these students in an integrated classroom and individually for those who needed extra help.

Spelling

In working with students of various skill levels as a high school teacher, private tutor, and SAT class instructor, I've never let a single spelling error go.

Spelling properly is an important skill to be practiced constantly through reading and writing.

As a private tutor and volunteer tutor, it was my job to help struggling students to work and study in more effective ways.
