I am an experienced elementary school teacher with a New York State certificate in ESL and common branches. Although I taught various age groups and subject areas, I specialize in teaching English as a second language. I use a variety of linguistic strategies to meet each student's proficiency level and learning style. For best results I utilize my own resources in combination with the student's school work after determining instructional goals. In preparation for the ELA exam I use a balanced literacy approach, which combines reading comprehension with vocabulary and phonics using whole texts and shared reading and writing methods. The ultimate goal is to move the student to the next reading level by improving his or her accuracy, fluency and comprehension skills. In addition, I will prepare students for the math exam using the instructional strategies of "Everyday Mathematics", a very popular program in NYC public schools, and show multiple perspectives of the problem by making various associations among math concepts. Students will learn to explain their thinking and use a variety of strategies to solve problems according to the New York State standards. My teaching Experience has shown excellent results not only with my third grade students last year but with my own kids as well.
