I was a peer tutor for three years (~400 hours) for undergraduate math and physics at Penn State. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to help students by highlighting points and techniques that I wish were shown to me when I was a student.
Depending on the student’s need I will give lessons focusing on explanations, work through example problems, lead students through problems,
assist with specific questions, make up practice problems, and advise on studying and exam-taking techniques.
I assess the student’s progress and the effectiveness of a session and adjust my methods appropriately, but students benefit the most when they are in touch with their own understanding and direct the session accordingly. Therefore, I encourage students to control how the session goes and I try to make students feel comfortable doing this.
My primary concern is that students feel they receive what they need from me, so I am very receptive to requests, suggestions and input of any kind from students.
