Let me make learning fun for you! Parents, whether your child needs help in elementary math, reading, spelling, or writing I would like to work with your child to help them improve on any area they need. I have worked in elementary classrooms for over 12 years with students from 2nd to 5th grade, many of them one-on-one or in small groups. Currently I am in the 2nd and 5th grade classrooms helping students in all areas, especially with ELA and mathematics, striving to help them meet the new standards of the Common Core. Using a variety of games, hands on phonics and spelling tools, and math manipulatives, I make the lessons fun and memorable so that the knowledge will hopefully be retained.

My experience includes a degree in Early Childhood Education, training in Fundations and Wilson Reading Programs, working with Special Needs children including Learning Disabled, Aspergers, ADHD, Hearing Impaired, and on the Spectrum. I have tutored privately for elementary students and in after school programs for over 6 years. My fellow professionals tell me that I am very patient, caring, and receptive to any strategies that help my students learn. After your child has put a full day in at school, let me help them understand and work through any challenging subjects with a fun approach!

ADD/ADHD

I am currently a teaching assistant in Special Education, experienced in working with children who are labeled LD, on the spectrum, and a multitude of other challenges. My students have Individual Education Plans or 504s to which I focus on meeting their requirements in the classroom.

I have an A. A. in Early Childhood Education and over 12 years experience working in the Special Education field for the same school district in the capacities of a one-on-one, assistant, and substitute teacher.

Aspergers

In my 12 years working in Special Education, I have worked closely with students identified with Aspergers in all subject areas, usually one-on-one. I have been trained in strategies in working with these students and all learning challenged students.

I have worked in the elementary school setting for over 12 years with students in second through fifth grade. I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and have been trained in various reading programs and how to meet the needs of learning challenged students.

Elementary Math

I am experienced in teaching math at all elementary grade levels, especially at grades 3-5. I like to use math manipulatives and games whenever possible to make learning more enjoyable. I am knowledgeable of the Common Core requirements and the New York State Mathematics Exams for grades 3 through 5.

Elementary Science

New York State's requirements for the 4th grade Science Exam is built on the knowledge our students start with in kindergarten. I have tutored for this exam for over 6 years and I am very familiar with its content and format as I have also administered this exam for learning challenged students.

Grammar

Currently I teach grammar daily to fifth grade students, using a variety of writing samples and simple drills. I also work with second graders on proper sentence structure which incorporates grammar daily.

Phonics

I work with Fundations and the Wilson Program to help students work through phonics and help build their word recognition. I also use Dolch word lists to help with sight words.

Reading

I have experience with different reading programs and skills to help identify a students' grade level ability. I am trained in the Wilson Program and Fundations which helps develop a child's reading ability. I also like to work on reading fluency with students to help them become stronger readers.

Spelling

Spelling games, word building, and sight words are some of the ways I like to use in tutoring this subject. I incorporate phonics into my spelling lessons to help give students the power to decode words and become super spellers!

Study Skills

I like to see if a child is a visual or auditory learner. From there, I help them find a method that makes studying an easier process for them so they can be more successful.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary can be a challenge for some students. That is why I like to use games and mystery clues to become word detectives to discover what words mean. Clues include pictures, puzzles, riddles, and charades to help learn the meaning of challenging words.
