History with teaching - With a mother who taught resource in junior high school, I have been born into an academic household where I first hand observed her tutor a handful of students at our home. After being exposed to different learning strategies, I spent my free time in high school gaining tutoring experience on my peers and their younger siblings. Since then, I have worked with champion learning center where I was assigned to travel to the homes of adolescents in inner city New York. Using English and Science tests administered by the champion learning center, I managed to create on average a twenty point improvement in three months for every student, with one student improving from a PSAT math score of 480 to receiving a 760 on the SATs. Lastly, I have spent the last year as a graduate teaching assistant for Intro to Psychology and History of Psychology, where I have customized review groups and lectured to over 150 undergraduate students.
Teaching Style - My greatest strength in tutoring is my ability to adapt to a student's needs. At the beginning, I take a lot of time looking through the student's work to assess his/her strengths and weaknesses. From there, my strategy is to use the strengths to build the student's confidence while providing different perspectives and techniques towards developing their weaknesses into strengths. Any tutor can lecture a specific subject and provide short cuts to help the student score higher on any one test, my purpose is to teach students how to study any subject efficiently to give them the tools to get an A in any subject and prepare them for college. In addition, I do my best to create a fun warm atmosphere where the student is free to express their frustrations and motivated to complete my customized homework which will be essential for their progression. However, there are times where I may create a more disciplined atmosphere where I use behavioral therapy techniques of creating rewards and punishments (ex: working with parents to increase Facebook time or giving an unfavorable vegetable such as brussel sprouts).
