My interest in teaching comes from a desire to help others achieve their full potential and to share knowledge about my passion: exercise science. Recently, I graduated from Willamette University with a 3.5 GPA in Exercise Science. I know from my experiences there that it takes a lot more than listening and taking notes to become a great student. It takes drive, passion, and dedication. It also takes some outside help: from classmates, professors, and tutors.

I specialize in tutoring anatomy & physiology, scientific writing, and fitness. My philosophy is to challenge students, but not stress them. I want every tutoring experience to be a growing process and I strive to have my students leave feeling accomplished, not overwhelmed. I take a student-centered approach that builds progressively upon the student's base of knowledge. I bring supplemental materials to help add to the resources provided by the student's school. I also understand that not every student learns the same way. Therefore I try to incorporate multiple learning approaches including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.

My teaching experience includes tutoring in college and high school. I also taught anatomy & physiology at middle school science camps while in college, and helped a number of friends and classmates learn health concepts and exercise techniques. Currently, I teach swim lessons on a regular basis and am a Certified Personal Trainer.

While I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I offer flexible makeup classes. I am willing to travel for tutoring or meet at my house. For new students I offer a free 10-minute consultation. I live extremely close to Albany Medical College, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and College of Saint Rose. I live about a 10-minute drive from the main SUNY Albany campus.

I look forward to helping you succeed in an exercise science, anatomy, or physiology course, teach you the basics of personal health and fitness, or help you revise your lab report or essay. Contact me today for your free consultation.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cooking

I have been learning to cook since I was a child. My mom and grandma always let me hang out in the kitchen as a kid and I learned many cooking techniques. I am particularly knowledgeable about making day-to-day meals more healthy. I have taken a few online courses on the subject, and have been making home-cooked meals for the last 3 years. I know how to bake cakes, pies, muffins, scones, and other basic baked goods, sauté, fry, and create basic meals.

Fitness

I have a B.A. in Exercise Science from Willamette University in Salem, OR. In this program I mastered the concepts of exercise physiology, strength and conditioning coaching, biomechanics, nutrition, and exercise for special populations. I have been an athlete my entire life, participating in Tae Kwon Do, Soccer, Basketball, Swimming, Track & Field, Cross Country, Rowing, and American Football. Through these experiences I've learned practical training applications. I have also been studying for my American Colleges of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer Exam for the last month. I take this exam next week.

Nutrition

I have been interested in nutrition since I was a young teenager. During high school I studied the subject on my own, and once in college took a full-semester course on the subject. I am not a registered dietician, and therefore am not qualified to create meal plans. However I am qualified to give nutritional advice including distribution of carbs, proteins, and fats, how to reduce or increase caloric intake in a healthy fashion, and what to eat pre- and post- exercise. I have a B.A. in Exercise Science

Study Skills

I am a very good test taker, even though I dislike studying. I have a B.A. in Exercise Science. Examples of the study skills I employ include acronyms, read and recall, written notes, and techniques to help clear the mind and focus on the task at hand. I have had a successful academic career including graduating high school with a 3.94 GPA and a number of academic awards and scholarships, as well as graduating from college with a 3.55 GPA.

Swimming

I currently teach swim lessons 25 hours a week. I have been teaching for 7 months and have acquired over 350 hours of experience. I teach ages 6 months and older, including adults. I am a certified Swim Lessons University Learn-to-Swim Professional and Instructor-Trainer. I swam competitively as a child, and have a degree in Exercise Science. This degree has given me knowledge and experience in training techniques, including strength & conditioning coaching, as well as exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and sports psychology.

Track & Field

I competed as a track & field athlete in high school in the 100m, 400m relay, pole vault, high jump, and javelin. I was the women's varsity jumps captain, which included women's pole vault, high jump, and long jump. I also ran cross country in the fall, so I have long distance experience as well. I have experience coaching swimming, so I am familiar with coaching techniques. I also have a degree in Exercise Science. This degree has given me knowledge and experience in training techniques, including strength & conditioning coaching, as well as exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and sports psychology. During college I took a course to prepare for my National Strength & Conditioning Association test for the Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist certification. I am also currently preparing to take the American Colleges of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer test. I have experience designing training protocols, including protocols specific to pole vaulters.

Trumpet

I have played trumpet for 13 years. I played in jazz and combined band in high school, as well as Wind Ensemble, and Trumpet Ensemble in college. I have experience tutoring trumpet and brass, including providing private lessons for an up and coming high school trumpet player, running brass sectionals for a middle school band, and running trumpet sectionals for our college Wind Ensemble. Throughout my career I have played 1st through 4th chair parts. I played 4th chair for the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon, 1st chair in our high school band, and jumped between 2nd and 1st chair in our college Wind Ensemble & Trumpet Ensemble. I have been offered a number of paid gigs, including Easter church services and graduations. I have experience playing many types of music including jazz, improvisational (although this is not my specialty!), classical, big band, baroque, contemporary, holiday tunes, and church hymns.

Perfect lesson — Josephine and I met twice a week in a coffee shop for almost six months. She taught me idioms, pronunciations, and also slang through free conversations and an article reading. She gave me many good suggestions to improve my English skills. Her instruction was so polite and enjoyable. I would recommend her to anyone. ...
