I also teach test-taking skills (including SAT, GRE and ACT prep), study skills, algebra, English, reading, writing, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), SAS and SPSS programming, SQL, research methods, photography and yoga. When working with students at the K-6th level, most of all I am sharing my own joy of learning and teaching them how to learn. I am certified to tutor reading, writing, English, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, study skills, elementary math and elementary science. I enjoy working with children of all ages and tend to make the lessons seem more like play than school "work." My students like my real-life examples, funny drawings, and tips on how to remember different facts (mnemonics).

Photography

In prior employment as a commercial property inspector, I was responsible for photographing street scenes, building exteriors and interiors, and any deferred maintenance items. I can introduce students to the basics of digital photography, including scene composition, saving and printing the photographs, and managing computer files. I can also teach them to insert picture files into Microsoft Office documents, attach them to e-mail messages or upload them to Web sites.

Yoga

I learned a gentle basic yoga routine at Hot Yoga in Washington, D.C., and have been using it successfully for seven years. This 20-minute routine is unique in that it is done fully on the mat so it is non-impact for feet and ankles. I have worked as a SAS programmer for more than 20 years on PC and mainframe platforms. My experience includes base SAS, frequently used procedures, database management, and data analysis through multivariate analysis.

ADD/ADHD

In tutoring ADD/ADHD students, I assess their abilities, difficulties and attention spans and tailor the lessons to their baseline mastery levels. I utilize patience, innovative teaching methods, hands-on practice and (where necessary) repetition to allow them to succeed at tasks at all levels of complexity. ADD/ADHD students are often very intelligent. I have had success tutoring ADD/ADHD students in technically complex subjects such as statistics, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.

Microsoft Access

I am an Access database developer and manager with experience building forms, tables, queries and reports. I can teach students the use of Access menu features and how to import and export data between Access and other software packages.

Regents

As a New York State high school student I took Regents courses, passed Regents exams in English, social studies, math and science, won a Regents Scholarship, and received Advanced Placement credits in English composition. I am able to help students with study skills, test-taking tips and test anxiety as well as subject-related material.

Sociology

I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in sociology and many years of experience in applied social research and statistics. My research areas of interest include higher education finance/student financial aid, social welfare and public health. I have worked in government, academic, and business settings and served as a subject matter expert on the U.S. government's student loan database. I also teach sociology at the college level.

TEAS

With my background in statistics and algebra and experience in public health research, I’m able to help aspiring nursing students prepare for the multiple-choice Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).
