First, I should say that I'm not a teacher. Not yet, at least. I hold a B.A. in English studies from the State University of New York at Albany, and I only want to put my skills and knowledge to good use. Tutoring is something I've been interested in for a long time; in school, I always felt that a one-on-one learning experience was more beneficial than competing with an entire class for the teacher's attention. The tutoring environment allows each student to work at his or her own pace, which is a crucial element in the learning process. Each lesson I give will be customized for that student's particular needs, based around the material he or she is studying at school. I also feel that having a positive role model for a mentor is important: to have a third-party be involved in a student's education, someone who is not mandated by the state to teach X or Y, but is there by choice, to help with homework, classwork, and to offer advice on daily life that a teacher may not be able to give. I would also like to mention that my capabilities are not limited to English only; I am knowledgeable in American and world history, as well as social studies. Math and science are not my strong suits, but I am not completely inept in those fields. Anything I can do to make a difference in a student's grades is overshadowed by the potential I have to make in that student's life, but whatever he or she needs, I promise to do my best to deliver it. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to meeting and learning with you. Hello all,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
