Each student with Dyslexia requires a specific program, uniquely tailored to her/his personal pattern of strengths and weaknesses. I begin where the student “is”, and skills and concepts are taught and practiced at a speed the student is able to manage. My teaching is based on a multi-sensory approach, because research shows that when people with dyslexia use several senses at the same time, the retention of information is greater. I have had training in several programs for advancing the academic learning for individuals with Dyslexia, and have had great success with programs that use “sound to letter / letter to sound” methods. I use exercises that teach strategies and promote automaticity in word recognition and syllabic-decoding, and teach a method of self-vocalizing while writing which aids in sound-spelling. Because of the nature of this disability, progress comes only through hard work. I am, above all, a compassionate and patient teacher. I recognize the frustration individuals with learning disabilities can have while trying their best to master the skills needed to succeed in school. For that reason, I introduce new and increasingly difficult work with scaffolds that will enable each student to become an independent learner.

I teach grammar as a process, the first step of which is exposure to spoken and written language. In this way, the student begins to notice (with help) how grammatical features are used in a piece of text and how an understanding of those features allows an author to convey meaning. This growing understanding of these features and conventions then helps the student to summarize, explain and clarify meaning in spoken and written passages. Then, comes practical application: helping the student to construct text of her/his own, using the features, from the simple, (nouns, verbs), through the complex, (appositives, gerunds) in personal writing. It is only through the process of exposure and noticing, on a regular and consistent basis, that the brain can learn to automatically say what is and is not a correct form of stringing words together. That is when a person has learned "grammar."

Great tutor — Judi was able to help my daughter understand some aspects of grammar is a short period of time. I was very specific about the parts of grammar that my daughter needed to learn and she just focused on those topics. I would recommend her as a tutor. ...
