As a high school teacher and college professor, I know one of the biggest challenges facing students today is bridging that gap between high school and college. The expectations are higher, the work load is harder, and many students don't even know where to start - this is where I can help you!

Students I have coached for standardized testing have seen significant increases in their scores between their first practice test and the actual test itself, and between that first attempt and second attempt. There are several little hints and tips to beating these tests at their own game, and I can show you where to start.

I have also taught AP Literature and Composition for the past thirteen years, and none of my students have ever scored below a 3 on the test - most score in the 4-5 range! I can show you how to navigate the multiple choice section, how to beat poetry at its own game, and how to master a text of your choice so you can answer that dreaded free-write question.

If you are looking for a writing coach, I can show you time-tested hints and tips to drafting that high scoring paper. I'm proficient in both MLA and APA styles of citation.

Contact me today to see how we can help you best prepare for the next phase of your academic career!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have taught high school seniors for the past six years and College English 101-2 for the past four. I have guided students through the Common Application, reviewed and edited their college essays, walked them through the transfer process from community college to a four-year institution and assisted students in finding and applying for appropriate scholarships and grants.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a K-8 teaching license in the state of NJ in Elementary Education. My score on the Praxis test for elementary education is 185, which was recognized for academic excellence. While my primary work is with high school students, I've worked in an elementary reading and writing summer camp, have assisted with elementary mathematics and social studies and have taught elementary science classes.

Phonics

Phonics is a part of reading recovery. As a high school level English teacher for the past thirteen years, I have employed the use of phonics in assisting my students to sound out words they are unfamiliar with. This has increased both their reading speed and their reading level.

Praxis

To become a teacher in the state of New Jersey, you must take the Praxis II series tests. I am familiar with the Elementary Education, Social Studies and English Literature exams, which I have all passed way above the minimum passing score. I am also currently studying the Principles of Teaching and Learning exam, which is a requirement for Nevada teaching licenses.

Public Speaking

Speech and Public Speaking is a requirement in New Jersey schools, and I have instructed students in this subject for thirteen years. In addition, I have taught courses on Public Speaking and Debate and coached the news anchors for our student run broadcast program. I have coached our valedictorians, salutatorians and student council presidents for their graduation speeches. I also lecture publicly myself at various conferences, such as the Plymouth Medieval and Renaissance Forum and the NJCEA Conference.

Social Studies

I currently hold an active teaching license in the state of New Jersey for Social Studies for grades 8-12. I also hold Bachelor's degrees from Rutgers University in History and Political Science. I've been teaching History and Government for the last eight years and thoroughly enjoy seeing students grasp the way our system works and why it was put into place in the first place.

Study Skills

Study skills are important for any successful student. I have had the privilege of teaching Freshman Seminar at Union County College in New Jersey for the last four years where I taught students how to prepare for the rigors of studying for college courses. I have several methods of organization at my disposal to assist students who have various methods of learning. When I teach Study Skills, the first thing I do is determine which of the seven intelligences is dominant in the student, then teach an organizational method which is most effective for that learning style.
