I presently hold the position as a Itinerant Tester. This position involves administering oral, reading and writing language proficiency tests. It allows me to assess students who speak languages other than English for language proficiency. I'm in a Highly Qualified status by passing the C-Paraprofessional Assessment.
My background has involved working with both children and adults with various special needs. These positions have ranged from: Tutor, Special Education Trainee, Case Manager, Human Service Professional, and Specialized Programs Teacher Assistant. These children and adults include having the following: Speech and Language Disorder, Autism, Hard of Hearing, Deaf, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and Multiple Disabilities.
I've had over 20 years experience in providing one on one instruction in targeting student's learning needs. The subjects have included: reading, study skills and language arts. My emphasis is reinforcement. Reinforcement has been a great advocate in increasing a students: motivation, self-confidence, attending and academic improvement. I've worked with students with Autism, in utilizing Applied Behavior Analysis(ABA)and Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT) intervention. During this process, I've provided direct assistance to parents regarding target behaviors to decrease body movements from moving repetitively. These self-stimulatory behaviors include: hand-flapping spinning or flipping of objects. Also, I've utilized the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)to assist in the communication needs of children with Autism.
I have worked in The Los Angeles School District and Clark County School District for a combined 20 years and have tutored 60-80 students. I've passed the English Proficiency Assessment for my present position as Itinerant Tester. I've also passed the Praxis Assessment for Paraprofessionals to be Highly Qualified. Working with teachers, parents and children towards their educational needs has been a satisfying reward for me.
I have experience in teaching grammar to elementary students. In learning the parts of speech, they were able to identify and use them appropriately. As a result, the students' reading comprehension and writing skills made noticeable gains.
I have worked in The Clark County School District in one on on and group settings with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. I provided assistance in the following: independent skills, educational prompts, grading instructional materials, and mediating sign language for clarity in communication for teachers and staff.
I've been able to assist beginning readers to decode new written words by sounding them out or blending the sound-spelling patterns. My initial approach for beginning readers is to use ABC flashcards to teach vowel phonics patterns: short vowels and long vowels. After a student is comfortable, sight words and high frequency words are introduced. I use high levels of reinforcement throughout the tutoring session. This has been helpful in both beginning readers and students with learning disabilities.
Reading is critical in bridging the gap between knowledge and lack of knowledge. It allows the mind to have adventure and excitement. It prepares and equips towards future endeavors. Please allow me to help you on this journey!!
