YOU CAN LEARN and I CAN SHOW YOU HOW to:
+++Overcome Fear and Failure
+++Master "Hard" Subjects
+++Find Success in Learning

It is my belief that there is a greater potential within all of us to learn any subject than we realize. My experience has taught me that once a person learns the "how to" of any subject, they are able to move forward confidently. My goal is to empower my students, giving them the skills and tools necessary to succeed. I teach my students how to overcome fear of failure. By doing so they will be able to better meet their academic goals.

I am a retired teacher. My major areas were Secondary (High School) Science and Mathematics. However during my 25+ years of teaching I have experience in teaching at all levels from elementary through college.

My approach to tutoring starts by finding out what the student knows and can do. By doing this I can help my students build from their current knowledge and have confidence to overcome problems while gaining mastery of new skills. My goal is to teach my students "How to Learn" so they can apply that skill to any subject.

I also stress the difference in approach for taking the ACT versus the SAT.

Algebra 1

Math is an everyday language, and my method of tutoring Algebra concentrates on that fact.

I provide students with a way to "read" their math problems that allows them to better understand the basis of new concepts.

Algebra 2

Math is an everyday language, and my method of tutoring Algebra concentrates on that fact.

I provide students with a way to "read" their math problems that allows them to better understand the basis of new concepts.

In Algebra 2 I build on the understandings that the student has already obtained and link them to the more advanced ones with which they are currently dealing.

American History

I am a student of history. In fact it is a hobby of mine to study and connect history to current events. I have a personal Black History reference page with links to information on African American History and research.

American History to me is one of the most interesting subject there is. The fact that it is about making one nation from many people of diverse backgrounds, faiths, races, and ethnicity is something that I find fascinating, and worthy of study.

Astronomy

Classic Astronomy is the study of the stars and space. Today with a greater understanding of Physics, Astronomy has exploded into a study of wonders that were only speculations a few short years ago.

Einstein's relativity has transformed Astronomy into the more scientific study of Cosmology. Space-Time, The Big Bang, String Theory, and Curvature of Space are all the result of a greater understanding of the heavens.

ASVAB

I have worked for a number of years in standardized test preparation. I have prepared students for ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, as well as ASVAB. I currently work with students applying for NROTC scholarships and have undergrad college students I help tutor online and through email exchange.

Baseball

I have been involved in all aspect of baseball since my youth. Played in college, coached in youth leagues and high school. Organized teams and leagues, and tournaments in all age groups from youth to adult.

Biology

The focus in Biology is mainly on the cell and its functions.

What the students needs to know and understand in biology includes: how to determine if something is "alive"; the similarities and differences between the different forms of living things; how living things are classified [taxonomy]; the chemical functions of cells [primarily photosynthesis and respiration]; growth and reproduction [mitosis and meiosis]; and the role of RNA & DNA.

Business

I worked as a stock broker and certified financial planner. I held the following licenses: SEC series 6 & 7, NASD, Blue Sky, Life Insurance [Michigan], Variable Annuity, Health Insurance [Michigan].

My experience includes being a certified financial planner, managing a training center, and owning a consulting firm. Combined with my experience as a teacher, I know the qualities, certifications, and qualifications required to achieve entry and be successful in a number of careers.

Chemistry

My focus in helping students understand chemistry is in the relationship of the mole to all aspects of chemistry. Mass-Mole relationship and conversions are mandatory for the ability to function and have any understanding of the subject.

Language & Math and their link is a key element for Chemistry students to be able to write correct chemical compounds, balance chemical equations, and derive mass and mole outcomes from given problems [Stoichiometry].

My goal is to connect and simplify the elements of Chemistry in a way that make the subject straight forward and easier to understand.

Chess

I have been a chess player since 7th grade (1959). I participated in tournaments in college and still occasionally play online. I enjoy the game and play whenever I can.

College Counseling

I have worked for more than twenty years as part of Upward Bound, a federal program that connects high school students with colleges. Upward Bound provides guidance and academic support for high school students who come from families where they would be the first generation to attend college. The program has two components, Academic Support and tutoring, and Summer Residence.

I also work with my spouse as a tutor and college counselor. We are both recruiters for the Naval ROTC and the Naval Academy. We are Blue and Gold Officers for the Academy, and she also works as a source for financial aide and scholarships for a number of colleges nationwide.

Currently we have over 200 young people in colleges nationwide, and more than half of them on scholarship. We have a system and plan that can take students and their families from the eight grade through to college graduation.

Economics

I worked as a stock broker and certified financial planner. I held the following licenses: SEC series 6 & 7, NASD, Blue Sky, Life Insurance [Michigan], Variable Annuity, Health Insurance [Michigan].

I have done business coaching and start-ups for both for profit and non-profit corporations. In 2003 I wrote the proposal and supervised the leverage buy out of a textile company for $4.5 million. I have also held the position of CFO for a small business. I currently act as a consultant for a number of businesses.

Elementary Math

The fundamentals elementary math form the basis of future understandings of this subject. One of the difficulties that plague students later in their education is the lack of any real understanding of math concepts.

While rote learning is usually the norm, it is important that a student gets an early understanding of concepts such as place value, equality, and the link between language and math operations. Without these and other understandings, math becomes a mass of disconnected pieces of knowledge with nothing to connect them.

My goal is to have students be able to "connect the dots" and get understandings of math concepts through the recognition of patterns and connections.

Elementary Science

The word Science literally means "to know". This is why elementary science is so important. The basic principle of the Scientific Method along with such concepts as the Conservation of Matter and Energy are important to instill into young learners. Also the knowledge that all living things are connected and inner dependent is also an important principle that young people should be made aware of.

English

Mastering of English is central to improving learning in any subject. The skills involved increase the ability of a person to communicate effectively.

The importance of mastering English can't be overstated. English is not only the native language of this country, it is the predominant language of the world. English is the language of money and commerce, and businessmen all over the world use it as their language of choice.

I am experienced in teaching students how to utilize word processing, spreadsheet, publishing, and database programs within these Office Suite packages.

Genetics

My experience includes teaching Genetics to high school students for five years. Genetics courses were part of my major, my major was Unified Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)].
Working with genetics describing dominant and recessive genes. Describing nature of outcomes from incomplete dominance [flower color/human skin color] , multiple alleles [blood type], sex-linked characteristics /diseases [male pattern baldness/hemophilia]. Using Punnett Squares for descriptions in mendielian genetics examples.

Geometry

I have tutored students in Geometry for more than 30 years. I have found that the key to mastering this subject is for the student to connect to some key concepts.

The line, equality, and basic algebra play key roles in getting the student to understand and master this subject. The link between knowing the concepts and definitions and being able to understanding and apply them is where I think tutoring should make the difference in Geometry.

Law

The Law is the understandings that we agree to as a society. In America that understanding begins with the Constitution.

However, there are other laws that impact us as individuals and as a society. These laws are often referred to as "Natural Laws". These laws are defined as; A body of unchanging moral principles regarded as a basis for all human conduct.

The study and understanding of law, its changes [evolution] over time, and how it tries to achieve justice in society is an important topic for all Americans because, they are members of one of only a few societies in history that allowed the people to make and change the law.

Logic

As a teacher of science and mathematics, I have had to teach the subject of logic as part of my lessons on numerous occasions. One could easily assume that it is axiomatic that I be familiar with logic, if only on an informal basis. However, I have formal experience.

My experience includes the use of logic circuits in computing and decoding outcomes from inputs into circuit composed of AND OR NAND and NOR gates.

I also have studied and taught Logic as a formal course Deductive and Inductive reasoning, and proving the validity or fallacy of statements, assumptions, and positions using facts/truth and axioms.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is the spreadsheet application for Microsoft Office Suites. Excel is flexible and has the ability to create charts and graphs as visual representations of figures.

Excel is a tool that can be used to: do basic and complex mathematics, analyze numbers, create visual representations, and develop understanding and explanations of data.

Excel is a tool that can be used for individuals, business, students, and anyone wanting to understand and make visual representations of numbers.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is a flexible and powerful presentation tool. It allows its user to make presentations as audio-visual presentations, printed flyers or slide, as multiple page or single sheets with or without notes. PowerPoint presentations can be edited and transferred to other media easily.

I have the experience to show how to maximize your PowerPoint use. I look forward to show you how to make PowerPoint work.

Microsoft Word

I have a great deal of experience working with Microsoft Word. Over the last 20 years I have used this application for a number of projects and as part of my daily life.

I enjoy showing individuals the flexibility and creativity of Word. Creating documents, posters, and even making webpages and business cards. Word can do it all, and do it all well.

Physical Science

Physical Science is the basis of Chemistry and Physics. A Physical Science Course contains elements of Chemistry and Physics and is often the student's first contact with both sciences.

I have over twenty years of experience in teaching Chemistry, Physics, and Physical Science courses during my years as a high school teacher. I have also worked as a tutor for college students in these areas.

Physical Science is also frequently the first time a student actively uses the connection between science and mathematics in the quantifying of data in the operation of the scientific method.

I have also set up experiments that help the student understand the use of basic concepts such as Work, Force, and Energy as they apply in the real world.

Physics

Physics is the study of the relationships between matter, energy, and time. It is a physical science that is the basis for most of today's modern technology.

I have taught and tutored students in Physics since the 1970's. I have experience working as a measurements and calibration technician before I became a teacher. This experience helps me be able to relate to problems students have with this subject.

Prealgebra

Math is an everyday language, and my method of tutoring math concentrates on that fact.

I provide students with a way to "read" their math problems that allows them to better understand the basis of new concepts.

I also engage in development and mastery of basic operational skills through the use of all facets of learning. Whether a person is visual, verbal, or auditory in their learning style I will develop an approach that is specifically designed to address their needs.

Precalculus

When I work with students in Pre-Calculus there are a couple of key concepts that I almost immediately focus upon:

The unit circle [with the Sine and Cosine function, their values and the relationship of radians and degrees (p = 180 degrees).

The other concept I focus on is the definition of function. Range and Domain.

Students taking these courses are generally solid in their understanding of math. However for many of them, this is often the first time that they really have had to "study" for a math course.

There is no standard pre-Calculus course because different schools focus their pre-cal courses on different subjects and objectives. Some focus more on Algebra, others on Trigonometry. However they all require a strong understanding of basic Algebra

Reading

Reading is the key to understanding all other subjects. The ability to read and comprehend makes all learning possible. Regardless of the subject, without the ability to read and comprehend additional learning cannot occur.

Religion

I have taken a number of courses on philosophy and religion. I am familiar with fundamentals of the Abrahamic religions [Judaism,Christianity, and Islam]; Buddhism, Hinduism, and Shintoism). I lived in Japan and Korea. I have family members who are Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist. My brother is a Methodist minister and my wife is a practicing Mormon. I have lived trying to understand a wide diversity of beliefs while holding that the respecting of an individual's beliefs is of the highest importance.

SAT Math

I have taught prep classes for both the SAT and the ACT. While I am a specialist in the areas of math and science, I am familiar with both test and can show my students methods that will maximize their scoring potential.

While there is no such thing as a "Magic Bullet" for taking these exams, there is help. There are some simple techniques that I will help students understand that will give them and additional edge on the SAT Math test.

SAT Reading

I have had several years of experience teaching ACT/SAT test preparation classes. The Reading section of the SAT requires more than just a knowledge of vocabulary. The importance of recognizing context and understanding how extrapolate meanings from context is important to success on this test. The approach I use for preparing students for taking the SAT includes, not only word knowledge but strategies for test taking. The goal is to maximize the student's score by making them aware of key elements such as time management and use of process of elimination to facilitate test taking.

Series 63

I was a certified financial planner with Investors Diversified Services [IDS] from 1973 to 1978. I was licensed under the State of Michigan "Blue Sky" laws. I had the old NASD license and Series 6 license and Series 7 as a registered representative for IDS.

I also have a degree in education and have experience teaching classes on test taking.

Series 7

I was a certified financial planner with Investors Diversified Services [IDS] from 1973 to 1978. I was licensed under the State of Michigan "Blue Sky" laws. I had the old NASD license and Series 6 license and Series 7 as a registered representative for IDS.

I also have a degree in education and have experience teaching classes on test taking.

Social Studies

I have traveled extensively and lived in Japan and Korea [2 years & 6 months respectively]. I have been involved in community development and civil rights since my high school years. My interests have include: History,Political Science, Government, Economics, and Religion all of which I have studied both formally in classes and informally through readings, writing, seminars, and political activity.
I have written a number of political opinion pieces and I am a contributing writer on a book about the Obama presidency.

Softball

I have been involved in all aspect of baseball/softball since my youth. Played in college, coached in youth leagues and high school. I even organized teams and leagues, and tournaments in all age groups from youth to adult.

Statistics

Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.

Statistics are applied in both the physical and social sciences to determine the significance of data collected and make informed decisions based on probability of outcome.

Study Skills

I worked in a number of academic study programs doing tutoring in a number of subjects. However a majority of my experience in developing study skills came with the Wayne State University Upward Bound Program.

In that program I taught math and science and worked as a study center supervisor for the Wayne State University Upward Bound Program, from 1981-1994. I supervised satellite centers for the program. I worked with students and supervised teachers in developing study skills utilizing resources such as reference materials, index, and glossary. I also taught Vocabulary, Reading, and Math skills development.

TEAS

The TEAS [Test of Essential Academic Skills] Exam requires the candidate to be able to show competence in a number of areas: English vocabulary and grammar; life science, chemistry, and earth science; and mathematics.

This test is required by many nursing programs as a qualifier for admission to their nursing programs. This is mainly because it has proven to be a successful predictor of student outcomes.

I have experience in teaching and tutoring in all these areas, as well as experience in standardized test preparation. In this I have a unique set of experience and knowledge set that makes me a logical choice for preparing a student for this exam.

I am certified in for testing ACT, SAT, ASVAB, and have covered math, reading, science. My experience includes teaching and tutoring for test preparation for these and other tests for over 30 years. I have great success working with students in developing techniques for mastering all the areas of this exam.

Track & Field

I ran track in high school 440 yd, 880 yd, and mile run, ran relays and long and triple jumped. Participated in track and field during time in military. I coached high school track for two years.

Trigonometry

I have taught trigonometry as a course to college students and tutored students in it at all levels.

Trigonometry literally means "triangular measurement". Trigonometry involves the unique relationships [functions] between sides and angles of triangles.

It is my belief that understanding that Trigonometry is the study of the unique ratio of sides for each angle of a triangle is the main thing that is needed for a student to master a course in Trig.

Vocabulary

Language is the key to all learning. It is a proven fact that the fastest way to improve your score on any type of standardized test is to increase your vocabulary.
Every job, career, or subject has its own unique language or "jargon". In most cases this jargon is tied to the knowledge need in that field. By learning the vocabulary [and thereby the definitions] of a job or subject, you are expanding your knowledge [and ability to understand] that job or subject.

In a very real sense vocabulary is the best proof that knowledge is power.

Web Design

I have designed a number of websites.

I have done work with pictures, animations, and videos. I have used several different softwares and I am very comfortable with all of them.

World History

I have a special interest in History and I am frequently ask why I feel that History is so important. My general approach is to say:
There is a old saying that says:

Those who don't learn the lessons of mistakes in history are bound to repeat them.

World War I was followed by World War II,
both were fought in part as a result of unresolved economic and political issues.

By not addressing the causes of the first war, and focusing only on punishing its losers, we laid the foundation for the second war.

History also teaches us possible solutions. Following WWII we rebuilt both Germany and Japan, and now both are stable, friendly, and successful democracies.

History is full of lessons to be learned and all we have to do is to look back and see what we can learn.
