I firmly believe that everyone -- without exception -- can excel in language, the key is just figuring out how the student best connects with the material at hand. None of us is born knowing a language, so we all start out on the same page. My job is to bring your student up to speed so that they continue to remain on the same page as their peers (or surpass them!). Positive reinforcement and confidence-building are parts of my teaching strategy, as I think these two factors play huge roles in the learning process and in an individual's ability and openness to learning new material.
I am a professionally trained writer with a Master's in English and Creative Writing. I have worked as a university-level English professor for several years, and specialize in editing, proofreading, and all types of English tutoring (literature, writing, grammar, business writing, reading comprehension, among others). I also previously served as Assistant Director of Longwood University's Writing Center, where I helped train tutors, helped student clients excel in their academic work, as well as assisted with professionalization documents like resumes, cover letters, and CVs.
I enjoy one-on-one training because it allows me to cater my skill sets to one client's specific needs and abilities, as well as allowing for a measurement of student success that is difficult to achieve in a classroom setting. I am more than happy to cater tutoring sessions to specific assignments or classes, and have a range of exercises and activities to stimulate minds looking to know more or brush up on their English abilities, including some that could be given to the student for between tutoring sessions. I am interested in tutoring students at all levels, though I am most experienced with higher-level students.

English

My introduction to proper English was quite early, as my grandmother was an English teacher for 40 years and she corrected my speech as I was growing up -- though she didn't have to for long. Since learning to read, I have excelled in English and writing classes all my career as a student. I worked as an editor and proofreader while attending graduate school for my Master's in English and Creative Writing. I also currently work as a freelance copy editor and proofreader.

Grammar

I worked as an editor and proofreader while attending graduate school for my Master's in English and Creative Writing. I also currently work as a freelance copy editor and proofreader, and have a several regular clients who rely on me for timely, well-executed products.

Literature

I have a Master's degree in English and Creative Writing, and my program afforded education in writing and in literature. I have been a voracious reader for about 2 decades now, and I am good at high-level reading comprehension and analysis. When tutoring literature, I try to help students find something about the story that really inspires or speaks to them in order to find ways to make the material stick in their heads.

Proofreading

I worked as an editor and proofreader while attending graduate school for my Master's in English and Creative Writing. I also currently work as a freelance copy editor and proofreader, and have a several regular clients who rely on me for timely, well-executed products.

Public Speaking

I have been trained in theater performance and have also taught at a university level for three years, both of which helped me gain first-hand experience with public speaking. Among the classes that I taught, Business Communications (with an emphasis on oral business presentations) was one of the most popular. I also have experience presenting both my creative and critical written work at professional writing conferences.

Reading

When I was being taught how to read, I had some trouble and had to adapt as a student, and those adaptations have helped make me an avid reader. Because of this experience, I have an idea of what this situation feels like from the student's perspective, which can help me figure out what exactly the problem is, and then discover a unique solution to it. Again, positive reinforcement is a part of my teaching style, and this is one of the times when it helps a lot by teaching the student to monitor and reinforce their own behavior.

Vocabulary

I have been a voracious reader for about 2 decades now, and I used to read the dictionary as a child. Learning new words and expanding my vocabulary have been almost like games my whole life, and I love chances to help other people do the same.

Writing

I have been writing poems and stories since I learned how to write, and have had my nose buried in books since I learned to read. In fact, even while being trained in other disciplines, writing was where I truly excelled and found happiness -- both personally and as a student. The move to achieve a Master's in English and Creative Writing was a natural one, and one that I have never once regretted. I have an innate passion for writing, literature and the English language, and I let that passion shine through in every project of which I am a part.
