ACT English

I hold Texas Certifications in 4-12 English and Reading. I can help you!

ADD/ADHD

I hold a Special Education K-12 Texas Certificate. I also taught 3rd and 4th grade for 10 years in a private school for the gifted. A large percentage of our students had ADHD. One year I had 6 of 15 children with ADHD. I don't know if we had large numbers of ADHD kids because they were gifted and bored in regular school and thus unable to focus, or that the larger classes of public school were unable to handle them. I used many strategies to keep these students engaged and focused. In the years since then, I have had many students with ADHD, some on medication to help them, some not.

Aspergers

I hold a Special Education K-12 Texas Teachers Certification. I also taught for my first 10 years at an elementary school for the gifted. We always had a few high functioning Aspergers students. These children were quite intelligent and had serious social challenges. Assisting them with social skills, study skills and offering reduced stimulation was often a successful first step in what they needed to be successful.

I also worked for two summers as a program leader (summer educational camp) for special populations, which included autism spectrum students who were not as high on the spectrum as those often called Aspergers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught for 17 years, Kindergarten-9th grade. My first 10 years of teaching I worked at an elementary school for the gifted, teaching in self contained classroom format. I taught a self contained combination 3rd and 4th grade for 8 years. In my classroom I taught all subjects except gym.

I left teaching for a time and when I came back to it I taught Kindergarten for 1/2 year, then 2nd grade and 4th grade for a year each. Again, these were self-contained.

This past school year I had an "interventionist" position working with 5th graders who needed help in Reading, Math and Science.

Elementary Math

I taught 3rd and 4th grade self contained (all subjects) classes for 10 years and know that basic numeracy concepts must be mastered early. Now that I teach 8th grade Math, I see many children who never really understood the basics. Math is fun - it is just puzzles!

Elementary Science

I have taught for 17 years, Kindergarten-9th grade. My first 10 years of teaching I worked at an elementary school for the gifted, teaching in self contained classroom format. I taught a self contained combination 3rd and 4th grade for 8 years. In my classroom I taught all subjects except gym.

I left teaching for a time and when I came back to it I taught Kindergarten for 1/2 year, then 2nd grade and 4th grade for a year each. Again, these were self-contained.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Texas teaching certification in English as a Second Language (ESL.) In my 17 years of being a teacher, I have helped many students improve their English, and I have worked with students who range from beginner to advanced. We will work together on speaking, reading or writing - whatever you need.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Outlook continuously since it was first issued many years ago. During that time I worked as an Executive Assistant on and off for around 3 years. I was placed into these positions through a temporary agency, which required a skill test in Outlook. I have supported multiple executives and coordinated their calendars using Outlook. Outlook is the most often used e-mail, calendar, and address book program in business -including educational institutions. In fact, Outlook is the e-mail/scheduling program I have been using in my teaching work for the last 7 years at Galveston ISD.

Phonics

I am certified in English and Reading and ESL. Learning phonics helps many of my students to better understand spelling and decoding.

Public Speaking

I hold a Theatre Arts certification EC-12. I also worked as a professional director for many venues including Disney Imagineering. A great portion of my work at Disney involved teaching public speaking skills to incoming international cast members who would serve as presenters and tour guides around the various parks at Walt Disney World. I also conducted classes for incoming groups of employees (cast members) in body language, presentation and speaking skills, storytelling and dealing with guests who do not speak English.

Reading

I have had lots of success in getting children excited about reading! The more a child reads, the more successful a student they become in all content areas, a fact proven by educational research. Unfortunately, passing standardized tests in reading requires a particular set of skills that not all good readers have. My many years of experience in teaching reading and the skills necessary for proving mastery on reading tests will help your student be successful.

Social Studies

I am certified as a Generalist 4-8 and help people understand Social Studies using the interesting stories of people doing extraordinary things. I spent 10 years teaching in a self contained elementary classroom, where our curriculum included Social Studies.

When I taught middle school English, I took great care to select literature that supported the Social Studies learning students were doing in their other classes. The novels we read helped my students achieve 100% on their Social Studies 2011 TAKS in the class led by Mr. Guss.

Special Needs

I hold a Special Education K-12 Texas Teachers Certification. I can adjust to help any "non-standard" learner. In my 17 years as a teacher, I have taught classes that included students with special needs. In my first 10 years of teaching elementary school in a self contained class, I had students with chronic illnesses(cancer, asthma, tracheostomy, diabetes), mobility problems, speech challenges, ADHD, and other issues.

I also taught on Bolivar Peninsula after Hurricane Ike, where a vast majority of our students were suffering from PTSD.

Study Skills

In my 17 years of teaching, I have learned many study and learning strategies to help my students succeed.

Students in all grades need to be taught study skills in order to be successful. In each of my years of teaching, study skills have been important to the success of my students on any classroom test and on the major high stakes testing such as TAKS. Depending on the level of student and on the student's personal learning style, I will help them with methods pulled from AVID, Quantum Learning, Cornel Notes, SIOP, Sheltered Instruction and other programs in which I have trained.

TAKS

My 7th grade students had 100% passing rate in Writing ('09-'10). My 8th and 9th graders had 100% Reading TAKS passing rate in '10-'11. I supported success in math, science and social studies TAKS. The new STAAR is very reading intensive and I have trained on successful strategies.

Theatre

I hold a Theatre Arts certification EC-12. I also worked as a professional director for many venues including Disney Imagineering

Writing

I hold a Texas teaching certification in English and Reading for grades 8-12. I am also certified to teach all subjects for 4th to 8th grades. In 2010 my 7th grade English students had a 100% passing rate on the TAKS Writing test and nearly that high the next year.

I am a writer and participated in the Houston Area Writing Project. In my life outside of teaching, I have proofread many professional documents.
