I am a licensed New Mexico CPA with more than 35 years of experience as a financial management consultant. I have taught accounting at the college level, and have presented extensively on the topic to adult audiences.
My career includes positions in public accounting firms (auditor, consultant, manager), manufacturing (controller, director of mergers and acquisitions), software publishing (chief financial officer), computer manufacturing (chief operating officer) and management consulting (principal, valuation specialist, problem-solver, project manager, services sales). In my career I have produced and presented seminars and educational programs on many different business topics. I have also conducted forensic accounting investigations and testified as an expert witness in court. I have also taught accounting for not-for-profit organizations at the University at Albany, a flagship campus of the State University of New York.
Among my consulting assignments have been the development and presentation of seminars on how to start and run a small business, how to establish books and records for business, finance and accounting for non-financial employees, and basic business budgeting. As a mergers and acquisition consultant, I advise clients on how to buy and sell privately-held businesses.
My cooking education began with a summer job in the kitchen of a major Adirondack resort hotel in Lake Placid, New York. Later, I took a number of home recipes to graduate school and began a life-long love affair with fine food and its preparation. I have applied a critical palate and a voracious appetite for food writing (cookbooks, magazines and other food writing) to preparing delicious food for my family and guests.
I believe in the use of fresh, fresh foods prepared as simply as possible to show off their best flavors and textures. While I'm familiar with the classic sauces and their preparation, I typically use reductions and fresh herbs to dress all manner of dishes.
The skills I can tutor include kitchen safety and sanitary techniques, using and caring for kitchen tools from A to Z, identifying and selecting cuts of meat, fish and poultry for specific uses, matching vegetables and starches to main dishes, using wine, cooking techniques, spices and seasonings in cooking, matching wine to menus, and presentation of dishes for beauty.
I hold a BA degree in economics, and an MBA degree in professional accounting. I have presented extensively on economic topics throughout more than 35 years as a financial management consultant.
I have used Microsoft Excel since before it was called "Excel", beginning with the very first version released in 1984 as "MultiPlan". I have built extensive linked financial models, created graphs, charts and tables, and developed financial analyses and projections using the tool since the start.
I have used PowerPoint to create presentations for more than 15 years. I've developed and used slide templates, created graphics and embedded pictures in presentations. I am thoroughly familiar with all basic functions, and most advanced ones.
I have used MS Word since version 1.0 for the Mac was released back in 1984. I'm currently using the 2010 version of this dominant work processing program.
I have been a photographer for more than 45 years, beginning in high school, continuing through college and adulthood. I am a Nikon shooter, with extensive experience with both film and digital photography. Available light or flash, I have used both to capture action, emotion and beauty around the world. My experience includes Winter Olympic sports, weddings, corporate events, portraits and travel articles. I can teach exposure, composition, lighting, and processing, among other aspects of the craft.
