A former Professor of Biological Sciences & Pharmacology in Boston's Medical Area, Dr. Vincenzo co-developed an NSF-funded integrated chemistry-biology undergraduate curriculum that employed the thinking aloud paired problem solving method for unearthing student misconceptions. In addition to this highly successful curriculum, he taught both undergrad and grad courses in physiology, pathophysiology, cell biology, genetics, neuropsychology and immunology.

Subsequently, he worked as a staff member/senior science writer for Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, writing about both the biological sciences and the chemical/material sciences & nanotechnology. He published numerous articles in laboratory publications, U.S. Department of Energy publications, and scientific journals. He has also published three books, one medically related nonfiction and two novels.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I have a PhD in Cell & molecular biology. I taught an annual third-year undergrad course in genetics at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, Boston, for 12 years, 1980 though 1992, then taught a Cell biology course — including, of course, genetics — at Wheelock College, Boston. I wrote about genetics and molecular biology for both Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories over a 12-year span from 2001 through 2013 (including the complexities of AIDS virus genetics & using si-RNA to silence genes in discovery of pathways of viral infection). I can submit pdfs of these articles, upon request. I am a AAAS member & keep up with the field in that fashion.

Macintosh

I have been a Mac user since 1985 and a former tutor for my colleagues at Sandia National Lab. I am skilled in the use of the following current Mac software: iPhoto, GarageBand, iTunes, iMovie, Safari and MacMail. I also am proficient and in the following commercial software running on Mac Systems: 10.7 (Lion) 10.8 (Mountain Lion), Word 2011, Photoshop CS5 & CS6, PowerPoint 2011 and Adobe Acrobat 9 & 10.

Reading

In my first life, I was a professor in Boston for 15 years, and I spent numerous hours trying to improve students' comprehension of complex science ideas, including authoring in-class textbooks to test their comprehension of what they were reading/studying. In addition to reading & writing, I am certified as a tutor in many science areas, where many students ultimately encounter the limitations of their reading comprehension skills.

These is often huge confusion with double-stranded DNA, chromosomes, chromatin, duplicated chromosomes, & the prophase /metaphase of meiosis I. Often, it's not even clear to them that mitosis occurs in just about every organ/tissue... read more
