Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught a number of ADD/ADHD students throughout my career in education. I was assigned a class of ADD/ADHD as a substitute teacher for several years. I am able to help organize and work on study skills with students. Even in college classes that I teach currently, I often work with students who need extra help with study skills and organization.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored for several years K-6th grade, and was a substitute teacher for many years in this age group. I have specific commendations from parents of children I have tutored. Presently, I tutor two third graders and two fifth graders. Previously, I tutored a first grader with a heavy concentration on reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

English

I have my major in English and have taught English composition and other courses at community college and 4-year colleges. I also have taught English as a substitute teacher and am knowledgeable about the rules of English grammar and sentence structure.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL here in Albuquerque as a Berlitz Instructor to employees of Intel from several different countries. I have also taught language prep classes for students who needed work on TOEFL. In addition, I taught abroad students in high school and in college. I am extremely aware of the difficulties in learning a different language and can help ease the student's fears and help them learn English.

Phonics

In teaching elementary and high school children as well as adults, I am able to help them "figure out" words and pronunciations using phonics and syllabic breaks. I have taught spelling using phonics. I also use phonic elements in reading of texts. I can teach students to learn letter sounds and apply this to their daily reading and writing activities.

Public Speaking

I have done much public speaking in regards to a fundraiser job I had. I also did public speaking in presentations of "writing skills" for a PH.D program at Nova Southeastern University. I have much experience preparing students for oral examinations; in addition, I have requested my students to do oral presentations and model public speaking for them as well. My experience in public speaking and presentations would qualify me to assist others in this field of public speaking.

Reading

I have taught reading on all levels. For tutoring, I have worked in the subjects of reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. I am expert in teaching inference, conclusion, what words mean in context and discussing the plot, characters and scene. I also love reading so am able to pass along best practices for reading.

Study Skills

I have much experience helping students with organization and study skills. I have always used study skill learning in conjunction with my other subjects. In my tutoring/teaching career, I always stress the need for "review and preview" and to find the best way for each student individually to learn the subject matter. I help students with specific study skill techniques, encouraging them to learn how to ask questions in class. I stress the importance of study skills in learning the material and getting good grades.
