I’ve been a writer for over 35 years, teaching English, writing, journalism, and study skills classes at the high school and college levels, tutoring in reading and writing in kindergarten to 12th grade, and working as an assistant director of marketing and a director of community outreach for a public television network. I have an MA in English and education, and a lifetime teacher's license from the state of Wisconsin.
I now specialize in tutoring middle school, high school, and college students as well as adults in writing, working with them on their essays, research papers, college application letters, speeches, theses, and dissertations. I also work with these students on related subjects, such as reading, vocabulary, literature, grammar, and public speaking. I coach students on reading and writing for the ACT and SAT exams as well.
Working as a substitute teacher in K-12 has also given me experience with a wide range of school environments and students, including those with special needs, and to learn to get up to speed quickly in each new class. Tutoring in the elementary grades has given me the opportunity to work with younger students, especially in reading and study skills. I have ESL certification and have taught college integrated and advanced ESL classes and well as tutored ESL in the public schools. I now provide non-native English speakers writing help with job application letters, resumes, and in-school essays.
I feel passionate about tutoring mainly because I enjoy my students and am heartened by the progress they make and the confidence they gain after one-on-one tutoring.
