Broadly speaking, genetics is the study of the inheritance, from parent to offspring, of DNA, and of the physiological or biological traits that are driven by the genes encoded in DNA. The parents and offspring can be cells or whole organisms. Molecular genetics is the study of the subcellular processes involved in the inheritance, maintanence, and regulation of DNA and of expression of genes, as well as of the processes within cells that are driven by DNA, RNA, which is transcribed from the DNA template, and proteins, which are produced according to the information encoded on a subset of RNAs (called mRNA). Medical genetics is the study of the genetic cause or proliferation of inherited human diseases. I have a Ph.D. (from Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR) in Molecular Medical Genetics, the study, at the molecular level, of the interactions and processes occuring within and between cells that result in a genetic disease (which includes both inherited diseases as well as cancers) and of the effects of molecular changes in an organism that result in disease, as well as of the genetic causes of inheritance of diseases or occurance of cancers.
As part of my studies at the undergraduate and graduate level, I have taken courses in molecular genetics, biochemistry, eukaryotic genetics and cell biology, molecular mechanisms of disease, basic neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and developmental biology.
