I am a certified full-time high school English teacher and an adjunct professor at a county college. I hold a Bachelor's degree in English and Secondary Education and a Masters in Modern History and Literature. I have been teaching reading, composition, literature and test preparation on the secondary level for the last thirteen years.
As a seasoned English teacher, I understand the importance of tailoring my lessons to the needs of each individual student. I would begin by briefly discussing with the student and parent any concerns they have regarding the subject matter, identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses in that area, and outlining the student's goals. Then we would make a plan for improvement and begin formal lessons.
If the student is interested in strengthening reading and writing skills, I would target specific skills with mini-lessons, and then branch out into longer and more complex assignments. I would carefully monitor the student's work and offer suggestions and recommendations for improvement. If the student has materials and assignments from a school program, I could also incorporate them into my lessons.
If the student is interested in preparing for a test such as the NJASK, the HSPA, the SAT, or Advanced Placement English Literature or Advanced Placement English Language, I would review the format and structure of the test, explain each section or task, review sample problems, and review skills necessary for mastering proficiency in each area. For test preparation, practice is key. After the student completes a practice set, we would review and discuss incorrect responses.
I have been preparing students for the HSPA for more than ten years and I use materials designed to help students improve their performance on each task in the Language Arts portion of the exam.
I have been preparing students for Advanced Placement English Literature, Advanced Placement English Language, and SAT for the last eight years, and I use materials directly from the College Board as well as materials from their teaching seminars.
My interest in tutoring is based on the belief that all students can benefit from one-on-one teaching and gain confidence in themselves through developing their skills in reading and writing.
