ADD/ADHD

I work in small group settings with students currently diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. The key to helping these students is to key them on task. Even the smallest object can be a distraction. It is important to move quickly through things to keep their level of interest high but, allow them extra time to complete the task if needed.

Elementary (K-6th)

Math basics in elementary consist of fact families, number relations, adding subtracting, some pre-algebra which would be sorting, grouping. Multiplication and division come between 2nd and 3rd grade depending on the level of proficiency of the student. Mathematics during this time is crucial because it builds the groundwork to higher level math.
Language arts begin with phonics, phonenemes, and sight words. 1st grade starts the beginning of sentence structure, reading comprehension and continued phonics. Learning new vocabulary words through strategies such as chunking can help students learn new words. Lessons to help students comprehend are text clues, picture clues and skimming.
Science and Social studies begin as integrated subjects and slowly get introduced on their own around the end of 2nd grade. Most of these studies consist of Earth science, insects, weather...things around us everyday. Social Studies generally will cover areas about the US presidents, the building of America and some introduction to the wars fought and battles won.
I have passed the Praxis I and Praxis II exams for the state of New Jersey which are content knowledge exams for kindergarten-5th grade academics. Material covered was Language Arts, Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Currently I am a basic skills teacher in Monroe Township school district certified in grades k-5th.

Phonics

Phonics are generally the study of letters to sounds. For instance, a kindergartner will learn that the letter b will make a certain sound. As students progress they will learn more complex letter sounds in combinations such as tion making a shun sound instead of the sound it looks like it should be. As the grades progress the level of phonics progresses until the student understands how letters and letter combinations sound as compared to how they look.
I have successfully passed the New Jersey Praxis I and Praxis II tests which include Language Arts, Reading and Writing. Currently I am a basic skills teacher in Monroe Township school district. I am certified in grades K-5.

Praxis

I have successfully passed the Praxis I which is given to students prior to entering into a BA program for teaching and Praxis II which is given to students prior to student teaching. Both tests are an accumulation of knowledge in areas typical of the grade the student will be teaching. I have tutored college students successfully and helped them prepare and pass both of these tests. I am a certified teacher in NJ.

Reading

I am certified in Wilson Fundations which is a phonic based program designed to help struggling readers. I have also successfully helped basic skills students out of the basic skill program by teaching techniques and strategies for reading comprehension.

Study Skills

To be successful with studying you must be able to sift through the information needed from what is not needed. I have helped students study for the ASK test, Praxis I and II and other mid term and final tests. The key to success in studying is to understand where you weakness lies and concentrate on one area at a time.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
