My top belief about teaching and learning is that everyone can learn and everyone can grow. As your teacher, I am here to help you to become your best self. Everyone learns differently. There are multiple paths to understanding, all equally valid and useful, and we'll work to figure out which approach works best for you. I deeply enjoy teaching and helping others make significant breakthroughs in their learning.

I specialize in teaching English (reading and writing), history, and math both for school and for standardized tests like the SAT or GRE. I can travel to your home or a nearby quiet space for our lessons. Feedback will be a two-way street for us - I will provide you with detailed and useful feedback and I will ask you, from time to time, for the very same thing. The most effective learning is student-centered, meaning that instruction is set up not as a one-way lecture but as a dynamic experience for you to study, practice and engage with the material that will ensure that you retain what you learn and can apply it in the future. I want to help you think about your own learning and tailor instruction to your needs. I will help you to answer the question, 'How do you learn best?'

The last belief about learning that I'll share with you is that it is a lifelong process. I look forward to guiding you along on part of that journey!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

For the past two years, I have advised students on their college essay writing and general application strategies (setting deadlines, applying for financial aid, managing interviews, researching schools and finding the right match), generally from the summer until December. I generally focus students' attention deeply on the process of essay writing, and I try to encourage and motivate students to write expressively about meaningful experiences, ideas, and values. Some recent students have gone on to schools such as University of Delaware, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, and UPenn.

Since this past August, I have continued to do this same sort of work except at a private academy known for chiefly for its SAT preparation program. I am currently advising four students who are applying to top tier schools in the Philadelphia area such as Bryn Mawr, Haverford, UPenn, and Swarthmore.

Social Studies

I graduated from Princeton University in 2006 with an A.B. in History (High Honors, Departmental GPA 3.85). I have an M.A. in History from the University of Pennsylvania (2012), with a focus on American history . I am currently enrolled in a teacher preparation program at Princeton University for high school teaching in social studies. I plan to be certified in New Jersey and Pennsylvania by the spring of next year.

Wish we had found him sooner! — In a very short time, Freddie was able to hone in on my daughter's needs and set up a rigorous schedule that boosted her confidence. She needed assistance in specific areas of math in addition to ACT prep. Due to Freddie's knowledge of the test, he was able to provide my child with information on areas to concentrate on as well as pacing guidelines. In addition, he outlined specific concepts that ...
