My study of English literature and the Italian language at the College of the Holy Cross (I also spent a year studying at the University of Florence through the Holy Cross Study Abroad Program) has given me a great deal of knowledge, comprehension, and confidence in the disciplines of grammar and writing. In studying two languages, I have also gained the ability to understand and teach these languages in a comparative sense to maximize clarity and comprehension in my teaching.
For two and a half years, I worked as a Proofreader and Copy Editor for Raider Publishing International, an independent self-publishing company. This has given me the opportunity to further develop my understanding of writing structure and composition as well as grammatical accuracy. Through this work, I have often had to turn unpolished, sometimes nearly incoherent, manuscripts into readable books. I have also worked as a proofreader for Pitney Bowes.
Aside from work, I volunteer twice a week as a foil fencing coach for a Fencing Club in Nyack, NY, where I teach foil technique to students of all ages; though, the students usually range in age from twelve to sixteen years old. My teaching style in this situation, which translates to my teaching style in general, is to explain the principles and reasons for the techniques and their applications rather than relying on memorization of terms. I have found that this provides the student with the opportunity to develop his or her own analytical and comprehension skills.
